So a couple of problems with the install tonight....

Looks really cool installed above the garnish of my pro grill. However, the image is reversed (mirror image) when mounted that way. Cutting the "green wire" flips the image. I actually have another camera which can give the right image, but doesn't look great. I will just live with it being reversed..... as I said, it looks really cool. Form over function!!

I think I got a bad override harness. I cannot trigger the override with either the switch or even by directly connecting the black and red wires from the harness. The black wire is providing 12v. I can shift into reverse and hit the switch for the front camera and see it.

 

Thanks Dave for the post. I've got a DPDT switching coming in the mail and wasn't sure how exactly to wire it. Wanted the same type of setup - off it'll work as normal, hit front camera, goes to front, rear goes to rear.

Do you need a separate switch to turn on the 12v to the camera? Or does the DPDT and relay handle that.

 

The camera needs its own direct power source. I wired mine into an aux fuse box that I installed on top of my engine fuse box.
You can run the power back in through the firewall with the video feed if you want and use an add-a-fuse on your fuse panel. The camera barely takes any power. The 14th photo down (man I did take a lot of photos) shows my circuit breaker on the left and fuse block on the right of what is the engine fuse box.

The 10th photo shows an add a fuse that I placed before my aux fuse box was installed. That one powers my LED lights under my tonneau cover.

 

This is messy, but here’s how you would wire a DPDT on this system. I didn’t illuminate the switch as the switch I have only lights up when you switch it up or down, which I didn’t care about as I can’t really see it driving anyway. Some DPDT’s have more plugs so that they have a backlight turn on with your headlights at night.

**note your “red from relay” can be on the top just as easily depending which way your switch is pointing, the “red from relay” triggers the front camera feed

So after some testing, this is more simple than it appears. I hate technical speak sometimes. It loses you with repetitiveness.

The black wire of the rear camera harnesses is hot. When it connects the red, the rear camera is shown. Now, if the red wire from the camera relay is added to these two, the front camera shows instead. The black wire from the camera relay goes to ground.

On the dpdt, the black wire from the harness is on the center of both of the two poles.

If you push up on the switch, the black contacts the red from the harness on one of the poles and the red from the relay on the other pole. This turns on the front camera.

If you push down on the switch, the black contacts the red from the harness only since the other was left blank. Thus, the rest is turned on.

 

I think you meant the black wire from the relay is grounded, the black wire from the harness is on the center of the two poles.

 

For that specific camera try grounding one of the halves of the green wire you cut and see if it corrects the image. It’s hard to determine which half is right but one should correct it and the other will just show a blank screen. Some people have had success with this tip

As far as the switch not triggering you might have your connections set up wrong, see above or email Brian, he’s good at getting back quickly

I found the issue with the override trigger. I had a bad connection on a butt connector where I split the red wire to 2. The thin wire require some serious crimping to make good contact.

No luck grounding one side of the green camera wire. It just flips the image upside down. Not a big deal.

Very happy to have everything working. Amazing what a little bit of coffee can do!

 

I have that same camera and had a similar issue with an upside down image. Late last night the company emailed me with that grounding fix. Bummed it didn’t work. I ordered a second identical camera to see if it was a glitch or not. Don’t have time to test it today, but I’ll let you know tomorrow.

 

Great minds think alike.... I also ordered another camera. Seems that the "green wire" switch for mirror image is pretty common across the cheap Chinese cameras. I will let you know what I find out.

 

I figured it out for this camera, after ordering a second. The orientation needs to be wires back not up like their instructions say. Then everything looks right. I moved my mounting position to allow for that change. The light is shining right off it but it’s hard to notice

Thanks Dave. I have not received my other camera yet. However, I do not want to change my mounting location as I really like where I have it. The issue is simply changing the mirror image setting which many cameras (including the one we both bought) advertise that capability. I will find one that works!

 

Who wants to send me their old one that I can reverse?

Even with the image reversed, I found the front camera really helpful several times today. I was able to pull right up to cars when parking nose in. Previously, with the Sport hood scoop, it felt like I was about to the hit the car in front of me...... only to get out and see that I was still four feet away with my rear end hanging out.
