So you guys put it into S5 instead of drive when you start the truck and it drives like a normal truck? Can you shift into S5 while you are moving?

The initial shift range in S mode is set automatically to 5 or 4 according to vehicle speed. However, the initial shift range may be set to 3 if the AI-SHIFT has operated while the shift lever was in the D position.

    Page 199 of the manual.

So yes you can shift to S mode whenever you want.

Just for further info for those curious:

*2: Selecting shift ranges using S mode restricts the upper limit of the possible gear ranges, controls engine braking forces, and prevents unnecessary upshifting.

Page 198 of the 2017 manual

Sounds like Toyota built disapointment into the tranny...

When new, my initial “learning” phase for my tranny could best be described as quite lengthy. Since having the TSB it’s even more clear that my tranny is a slow learner. My initial results post TSB were excellent but the tranny learning/AI process is resulting in some funky things. I still like my truck but will not give Toyota a pass on this neurotic 6 speed when others are making butter smooth trannies with far more gears. My son’s 9 speed Trailhawk is butter smooth.

    I don't understand this part...

I'm curious about what is actually going on. I had my tranny TSB'd for shift flair and it never did it again. I'm assuming that they are reproggramming the computer to change the learning that caused the need for a TSB in the first place.

I think that basically means if you are driving in town or at a slow speed.

I've got about 1500 miles on the TSB. Thought it was great at first. But I'm starting to feel the funky stuff again here, too.

I’m just getting weird (jerky) shifting that comes and goes. It did this when it was new and I’m assuming the reflash has something to do with it agai. If it keeps up what it’s doing it’s going back. It could also be the regular gas courtesy of Marathon adding to it. My truck hates regular and hates cheap gas even more.

You’d think Toyota was new to automatic transmissions.

Most noticeable is that dead pedal feel where it upshifts too quickly when accelerating to 30mph. Good acceleration from 1 to 3 and then a sudden drop in power. I assume this is when it too quickly goes to 4. It's in 3 for just a split second. And when/if you continue to put what feels like normal foot into it to regain/continue acceleration, it drops back down to 2 or 3 and revs.

This disappeared after the TSB but is coming back.

This sounds exactly what S mode fixes. That is an unecessary uphift IMO.

And it’s only a 6 speed tranny. You’d think Toyota could at least get 6 gears to shift right. It’s not as if we asked them to build a Hubble telescope.
