I have never seen a lathe with a Rheostat if you can make it work it should work.

Even with one in back gear they still move pretty fast depends just what your welding .

I guess it comes down to just what your welding

I have drive shaft builders that use lathes most have the guns attached and for best results end up using a straight gun .

your planning to hold a goose neck gun keeping things straight enough to prevent wire feed issues is interesting

Only one ive seen is the one at work that they use for ships shafts. They will put the whole shaft one the lathe, center it up and all that, then do weld build up and machining without having to take it out of the lathe.

Buddy does have 3 rotary tables that he uses quite a bit. Id look into one of those over a lathe. A good rotary table with a steady rest type support could do large pieces too. He has machines just for it though with a Mig setup and a tig setup. Torches get nice holders and just pulls the trigger or foot pedal. Tig he just adds filler manually

Just one of those "since I have it" things.
A future project is to build a small positioner. I have a few extra four jaw Chuck's laying around.

Look for one that fits what size you need they are not that bad to repair if you get one for free.

I was forever bringing that kinda project home .

Just what are you getting into that you think you need one ??

There have been a few projects where a positioner would have made life easier.
    Plus I enjoy making shit.

Interesting thing I noticed When my AC compressor kicked on the Output on the XMT-304 dropped 10 amps .

I just happened to be standing in a spot I could see the display

7018 electrodes work so much better right out of the rod oven I just can`t see leaving it plugged in when I doubt I stick welded at home since last winter.

A little Preheat with the torch helps

Buddy of mine welded these antenna tabs on my aluminum front bumper since I don’t have the setup for aluminum at the moment. Welds are solid and do the job, not the prettiest Tig welds I’ve ever seen but paint fixes a lot of stuff.

Now that I have a minute to comment, I'll say I didn't think that aluminum weld looked that bad.

For that matter, I can appreciate the welds that look like art, but the practacle side if me appreciates the welds that I know are quality and didn't take forever.

Make the weld, finish the job and open a beer.

You know you can have a beer when you know the job is not coming back to be redone.
