OBX Fishing and Wheeling

While on my trip to the Outer Banks this summer, I plan to drive my truck on the sand! Any tips on what I should bring or how to do it safely so I do not get stuck!

Second, I will be fishing off the shore and off the pier...any tips here???

 

Hey man when you going down to OBX? im leaving to go down there second week of august

 

I will be back long before August!! Is there anything I can catch that would be worth eating??

 

I'm heading down on 7Aug. Can anyone recommend a boat to go out on for fishing?

I'd have to look online to see what is normally in season.

I'm not sure what kind of fishing you are looking to do, but I went on an afternoon inshore trip with Captain Marc in August a couple of summers back. He was a really nice guy to fish with and has the perfect boat for light tackle fishing those flats. We ended up catching at least a couple dozen speckled trout and a few flounder.

Are those rates for each person individually or the group of 6??

 

When we went it was the same price regardless of how many people. I wouldn't want more than 3 people fishing at once in that size boat though...

 

Sweet, problem is I only got me going so I would have to pay that for just me!

 

I just got back last week. I was down for a whole week.

As far as the 4wheelin its not as bad as everyone says. I was cruisin with stock tires they put on the TRD Sport with normal air in them and I was doing fine. Just dont stop in deep sand.

The fishing was spotty at best.. We caught a ton of skates and sharks cause we were casting to deep from the beach. Once we pulled the lines in a little we were getting in to the Whiting and all. We were using pieces of shrimp and Finger Mullet as bait.

I was prolly the luckiest mofo of the week down there. I pulled in a 32 inch striper right off the beach my last day there. They aren't even supposed to be running down there right now. I was shocked as hell when I pulled him in... Plus it was on my Bday!

 

I know how you feel. I will be the only one in my group that cares about fishing. I guess I will have to find some others who are interested in going out. I will have to look for some party boats in the area.

 

I wanna find a header boat and try to get on it!

 

Nice fish, how far do you wade out when doing surf fishing and what time of day do you go??

 

Thanks.. I was using a 12' surf rod standing on the beach, casting out about 25 - 30 yards... Or right on the sandbar and reeling it in a bit to try and put the bait right on the ledge of the sandbar. The secret down there is to not cast out too far (thats where the shit fish are; sharks and skates). I was using a top and bottom leader rig. Shrimp and little pieces of mullet. I caught him at about 2pm on the incoming tide. The incoming tide is nice there because it makes the ledge right before the sandbar deep enough for Blue Fish and such to run through.

My buddy was using an 8' rod and was doing just fine getting to where the fish were.

I recommend getting a piece of PVC pipe for the sand, a chair and some cold beer... Relax and enjoy!

 

What is the Sandbar?? I am staying in Rodanthee

 

I was fishing in Corolla and up north where you can drive on the beach.. Im not sure of the deal in Rodanthee.

A sandbar is an area about 30 yards out from the shoreline where the water gets shallow again. Fish tend to hangout in between the shoreline and the sandbar on incoming tide as the water gets deeper (in my experience at least). Alot of times little bait fish get caught in the area in between the sandbar and that brings in the bigger fish. You can tell where it is most times cause the waves will get bigger in shallower water and then flatten out again when the water gets deeper and then get big again right before the shoreline.

 

Agreed... Just talk to some dudes at the local tackle place and they'll get you hooked up.

We also found a local crabber to buy crabs from for $50 a bushel! Which is stupid cheap!

 

I just got back today. I didnt get to fish, but did take the truck onto the beach and it did fine. I was on stock tires also and dropped the pressure to 25psi the first day and then normal pressure the the second day. I did notice some extra spinning with higher pressure. Other than that it was a great time. I post some pics of the truck on here later.

 

don't air down you will look like a retard. keep it in 2wd till you feel your tires are slipping. dont drive like your drag racing and you will be fine. i have seen 18 wheelers, and 4 door cars on the beach its not that big of a deal.

 

Find a TWs bait shop for info; dependable and no BS...if you fish Oregon Inlet or the various ramps heading south, AIR DOWN as stated above; the sand is generally chewed up pretty good, especially near the ramp entrances... stay clear of red/pebbly areas of sand near the h2o in your vehicle, great place to catch sand fleas, but too soft for yer ride...slide down to Ocracoke(Tradewinds Tackle for info) if you get a chance, might be some bluefish etc running...try to fish 2 hrs before and after the incoming/outgoing tides(get a chart), and if possible, have the sun at your back and from the dunes look for cuts/troughs at low tide and fish them as the tide comes in...darker green water will indicate deeper pockets and such. Try lobbing a mullet chunk in the beach break, puppy drum and larger will often feed a few feet off the beach...have fun and give a report!
