Do you need to know, or care?
This sounds normal, it needs to be reset to a different speed.

I tried the pressing in on the button to hold but it never went to a regular CC. I did find (frustration) that if I pull the control toward me like flashing headlights it deletes the current setting. I then reset at new speed. Maybe this is the way it was intended to be used.

Like when you push the button in to turn cruise control on, hold it down for a few seconds and then try setting the speed. You ever had cruise control before?

That's what he's doing, but it's not setting the new speed. Just keeping the original setting

I think it’s normal for Toyota. Set cruise for 40, then get on the freeway, accelerate with pedal to 79 and want set to 70, you have to cancel (pull cc stalk forward) then restart cc. My wife’s Infiniti has this crazy 4way cc stalk that does things like, a long press will either speed up or slow down by 5mph, medium press does 3mph and quick does 1. You can also do what OP wants, change from 40 to 70 via the cc stalk.

I have to say - TSS is the worst implementation of adaptive cruise control I've used. This is my third car with it and it's biggest benefit has been in stop and go rush hour traffic. TSS just turns off below 20 miles an hour so it's completely useless there. If you're not paying attention and it turns off it will just let you coast right into the car ahead of you.

TSS isn't a substitute for paying attention while you drive. On the road trips I've taken, it's worked exactly as intended. I wouldn't purchase another vehicle without it.

WTF??? CC has never been intended to be used in stop & go traffic! Not 30 years ago & certainly not now!!!

When you think about it, standard cruise control is a super dangerous concept. Dial it up to 75, then no matter what the vehicle will travel that speed, no matter what happens to the driver (fall asleep, heart attack etc.). TSS and similar will save tons of lives. Just last week I was going 85 through Montana... I was passing a semi truck, when I was doing my shoulder check, the truck started beeping, it turned my head around. It applied the brakes for me, then I saw a giant barrel just sitting in the middle of the road, my speed was way reduced allowing me to drive around it.

Standard cruise control, going 85, I would have nailed the barrel, probably causing a huge accident.

CC and adaptive cruise control are two different things. I would agree regular cruise control should never be used in stop and go traffic. I also agree that no system is a substitute for paying attention while driving. You are always responsible for your car.

The 2015 BMW X5 adaptive cruise control will work in stop and go traffic. It will bring the car to a complete stop if the car ahead of you stops. You have to tap the gas peddle to get it going again and it will resume at 1 to 2 mph maintaining distance with the car ahead of you and will increase your car's speed all the way up to the set speed.

The 2018 Volvo S90 will do the same thing. However, once the car comes to a dead stop it will also start the car moving again without pushing the gas provided it has only been stopped a short time (guessing three seconds or less...might be two, might be four). In addition, it will steer the car for you as long as you are resting one of your fingers on the wheel.

You can set both at very low speeds though I'm not exactly sure how low.

I would argue both of these systems which never get tired, distracted, never answer the phone etc. are safer than your standard driver in stop and go traffic (within limitations...i.e, a snow storm, heavy fog, etc). In addition, they both make rush hour driving a vastly more pleasant experience.

The Toyota TSS is gimped in comparison. It would be interesting to see how the lexus system works or if it exactly the same as the toyota one.

Nope. Because "set" is the down direction (same as decreasing speed). So you have to cancel the set speed by pulling stalk toward you, then hit "set" once you get to the speed you
Why not? What's the negative of using it this way? Just because it wasn't orginially designed for that doesn't mean it should not be implemented.

Thank you to all. Now I know it is not me nor a problem. Just normal for this Toyota.

I will have to get used to it.

This thread is making me think I'm crazy. Now I have to test mine tomorrow. I swear that if you turn cruise on, get to the speed you want, then press down on the lever, it sets your speed. Then if you want to press the gas pedal to speed up and tap the lever down again (set), it will set a new speed. If you press the gas pedal and don't hit set, you slow down to the original set speed.
