What gets missed in this discussion is the availability (or lack) of the MT. Toyota really has their head up their butts on that.

But if I really wanted to hardcore wheel (that needed CC) I'd hold my nose and get a Jeep.

I love my sport with the manual tranny. But if i were you, i would keep looking for that cement OR you want. To answer your question, i definitely dont regret the sport! I would have gotten an OR but i wanted the hill start assist (cuz convenience) and good handling.

I've got the 17 Tacoma Sport. Have had a year coming next month. I reside in Maine, so crazy snow, endless dirt roads and pits, hunting/fishing spots only a truck can get to, and endless highways to get anywhere. I personally chose the sport as I travel for work (travel welder) and preferred the feeling of the sport on the highway, along w/the looks of course. There was not a single snow storm this past winter that I even slightly struggled, and actually spent quite a bit of time pulling people out of ditches who slid off the road (That giant storm we had February 15th, I drove from Bangor Area of Maine, to Oxford CT, then back to Bangor, 21 hours of driving due to snow conditions and traffic all over the road, without a single issue at all.) I've gone down 4-wheeler trails with it (Those paint job buffings are expensive) without a single struggle, joined the guys on the mud runs, didn't do any of the crazy stuff as I didn't want to damage the truck, have trudged through a few wet areas that were easily 24"+ of water (we get massive flooding up here on the Penobscot River during spring.

I was in the same boat as you, OR or Sport. In the end, I've yet to find a need for the lockers even though I was worried about not having them, LOVE the looks of the sport w/the hood (comments all the time on the truck) and it rides great on the highway (just got the new update on ECU which made a massive difference) . It really comes down to, Can you settle with the better looking truck that doesn't have lockers? Or do you want to get the lockers w/the flat hood in an off chance that some time you MIGHT need them.

Nothin wrong with either...or my Limited contrary to some o_O. Cement in either trim is just damn good looking...except maybe the Limited lol. Sport has its place, I prefer the color keyed flares personally...every Subaru, Jeep Liberty and small cross over where I live has the black overfenders like the OR....hoodscoop...had one on my 2nd gen...All I can say is that I didn’t NOT like it I guess. Taking curvy roads at highway speeds is definitely left to cars and the like. I’m guessing the Sport offers a comfortable highway ride I presume as I my Limited does for sure. I’m sorta agreeing with the better to have it and not need it adage....to a point. Listen, when I stared out in my profession I wanted to be just like the Firefighter who had every freakin gadget in his PPE, all the crap hanging off my utility belt, knives, lights, shears...you name it I was all about it...Fast forward 11 years and holy shit man the most used things I carry on in my bunkers are a pair of old pliers, a good knife and a pen...probably the pen the most. Would a locker be welcomed?..for sure! Is it the end all be all?...uh no...have I gotten everywhere I needed to go with my Limited 4x4 being careful and applying some “left foot braking” on tougher obstacles...yup. Although some new A/T’s are in order for sure .... a 4x4 Tacoma will get you just about anywhere you are want wanting, regardless of trim..enjoy what you choose man!

I just sat back and thought about what I did. I don’t do any crazy trails, the truck is 100% a daily, it will be driven in the snow, and I want to keep things as cheap as possible. Only thing that had me flinch is the snow. Then I remember all the Honda civics I see doing just fine. Sport was an easy pick for me. May add an e-locker one day, but for a daily?? I have never heard of anyone having an issue. Tires seem to be more of a factor for a daily.

Same, but hey at least I don’t have to worry about vanos grenading or subframe tearing out.. other than that it was one of the better cars Bmw made as it pertains to driving pleasure

Oh, forgot to Mention, we do have the Auto LSD (Limited Slip Differential) in the sports also for those that didn't know. I tested it just to test it, never had to use it, and yes, surprisingly, it works really well. So for that 1 random off chance, you are in a spot where you've got a tire in the air and getting no traction and would normally turn on the Lockers... pop the Auto LSD button, and you'll be on your way once again. THAT alone, was the remaining deciding factor on me getting the sport over the lockers on the OR version.

To each his own though.. I myself prefer the black flares on my cement off-road.. feel like the color fenders blend too much and look to plain

Mine was all fixed. Slick top, manual, beisan, plates. It was just maintenance. I’m @15k in the Tacoma in 6 months. Imagine keeping up in that with a 200k mile M3 ;). Got a little extreme, and with a kid, I felt it was a little more important to be practical. No regrets in buying the truck, but i’ll get my car again.....in 16 years....when she moves out ;)

Hey, I love my 2017 TRD Sport. Don't do any off-roading only daily use going back & forth to work. But, haul lots of sod, rock, sand, furniture, etc. I like the stiffer suspension... feels like a truck. Yet on the highway rides great at 80... smooth as silk. I have had Sport 4Runners over the years as well. That's all I buy in the truck line of Toyotas. Your choice dude! Trust me, you'll love it either way. My first Toyota was a 1968 Toyota Corona 2-door coupe that I bought in 1970, when I came back from Nam and got out of the Marines. Saw them first in Okinowa. I was the first person in Miami that I knew who owned a Toyota. Being an old fart... I have probably owned eight or so Toys over the years. Love em for reliability.

El Duderino... thank you for your service Brother! Semper Fi!

I didn’t come from an m3 but my last ride was a 335i msport!...I know not nearly as bad ass as an m3 ...by the way which gen m3? Love that damn fine German engineering but holy hell that thing was expensive to keep up with. The Auto LSD is pretty nice for that slight off camber stuff in 2wd...but if your in 4...slight left foot braking and slight throttle will brake your spinning wheel(s) and re distribute torque to what wheel has traction..acts very much like a locker. They’ve been teaching technique to the military drivers out in the field for many many years. Works amazingly well

The OR has automatic limited slip also, if I am not mistaken all Tacoma's have it. Way back in the first couple years of the 2nd Gens the Sport came with a mechanical limited slip and the other Tacoma's did not.

Yup, was more or less letting him know, he's got options if in need of a little traction.

I bought the OR because it has a bigger differential and has more function for my use. That was enough for me
