Hood Scoop

Has anybody with a hood scoop actually opened it up? I looked this morning and i noticed that it isnt opened to the engine. If anybody has opened it do you see any difference? better air flow? cooler engine?

 

It's not functional. It is just for looks!!!!

 

opening it up wouldnt do a thing except get more dirt and water into your motor. id be a different story if you mounted an intercooler or something up there and opened it up i guess.

 

pm chris4x4. i saw in a different thread where he was talking about that area on the hood being a negative pressure zone, or something like that, where even if it were open the air just goes right over top of it. so basically its not even close to functional, would be cool if it was though.

 

I know when its raining, I get a puddle on top of the scoop and it only fludders a little no matte how fast I go. So it surely isnt an air gatering point closed up. IF it wer to be opened up and air dumped out below the truck it could cause some vaccume effect, but it would screw up the whole aerodynamic effect of the front end.

You could conect a tube from the scoop to your enclosed cai box. I seen it in one tacoma before. Not sure how well it worked though.

 

If it's true about the scoop being in a negative pressure zone, then this would have a negative affect. It would actually pull air OUT of the airbox.

 

This thread gave me total deja vu.

 

I opened mine up... No noticable difference in dirt/mud in the engine.... and no noticable shift in engine temp...

SPOOKEY I was thinking the same thing as I was reading this thread.

 

I dont think chris4x4 was saying negative pressure because it was closed. The way i understood it the air would hit the front of the grill and be directed up and over meaning the opening being open would still suck air into it but it wouldnt be like the air was being forced into the scoop. I dono just what i read.

 

Im not 100% disagreeing with you, but until I saw airflow tests to verify one way of the other, I would lean toward the scoop not flowing much of any air. This supported by Bulldogs post of no noticable dirt increase under the hood. Engine temp wouldnt change, its regulated by the thermostat not air passing by it.

 

Yep agreed Toyota and their TRD department are'nt dumb. the string test could maybe give some answers.

 

Do you have your scoop opened? The string would tell a lot, but needs to be done on both configurations to really tell the story.

 

there are a lot of cars and trucks out there with factory hood scoops and I guarantee that the sports cars have positive pressure. I think the key reason why they aren't funtional and why TRD would not utilize it is due to the fact that there would be a rediculous amount of water and dirt getting sucked in for being an every day driver. you would be cleaning the filter every week.
