Sitting at the dealer now. I called ahead and spoke to a manager about it being much worse when at high altitude. Since they won’t be able verify that he said it wouldn’t be a problem just flashing it. Now of course the service advisor who checked me in says they need to drive it and then flash if necessary. Hopefully they take of me so I don’t have to waste all day arguing or calling Toyota. Finger crossed they just apply the flash.

Ok they did the flash, waiting for them to bring it around so I can drive it home. I was happy with my truck so if it’s better I will be stoked.

If people are finding some relief from the stumble issue by using premium - and I do not doubt them - there's a serious ECU programming issue here. Modern engines adjust their timing to compensate for octane levels. There should be no difference in performance between using regular and premium.

There should be no difference but there is a difference. It was the same in my 2nd gens.

The stumble this TSB addresses and the stumble that goes away using a higher octane gas are not the same.

Hmm? My son has a Gen 2 SR5 PreRunner V6 w 5 speed auto and it runs great with zero problems. We are pretty much at sea level in Houston. I wonder if altitude has something to do with it.

In my 2nd gens I'd always get a rattling sound (knocking/pinging) on inclines with 87 octane. It would happen when the truck would try to hold a higher gear. If I forced a downshift (or it downshifted on its own), the sound would stop.

With 91 octane the sounds wouldn't happen at all.

Is this issue only found on automatics?

900' here with timing issue on regular. Don't think it's an elevation issue. Just luck.

I agree. Luck. And maybe driving styles. Clearly, everyone doesn't have the problem, and some people do, as evidenced on the forum.

(Let's not argue this here. No need. Ive seen the back and forth in multiple other threads and just take it at face value. No axe to grind on my part).

I took my Tacoma in this morning to get the 30k service and get the new update. The service rep. looked up my vin and said there were no recalls associated with it so they could not install an update. I asked for it, giving the TSB 0062-18 number but said without a recall they couldn't.

    Does this sound correct?

No that's not correct. It has nothing to do with "recalls". Totally different thing.

If your VIN shows up for the TSB, they should do it.

    Thanks

I'm not sure what else to do since I asked for it by name and they denied to install it. All they suggest was to drop it off so they can check the issue.

If your service guy doesn't understand the difference between a TSb and a recall, you need a new service guy. Did they mention the AC fix? That's a service Campaign, not a recall either...

He was the appointed service rep when I did my appoiment online. I will try a different delearship. Does the dealership begin to charge for any TSB updates after a certain mileage?

No TSB, and no problems here on my 800' to 1,800' daily commute.
Just keeping an eye on the thread to see how gas mileage is panning out for folks. If this TSB could bump my 15. something mpg up a point or two, I'm all over it. Otherwise I'm not driving two hours, to sit two hours, to have something fixed that isn't broken. (for me)
