I'd be happy w/ an updated 1GR like what my 4Runner has. It is a fantastic engine and I'm getting 22 or 23 mpg over most tanks (mostly highway). It has plenty of pull for a 4600lb vehicle, too.

Does anyone know when the 3rd gen is due? It has to be within a year or two. My dad is chomping at the bit to buy a Taco, but if a brand new one is due soon, I'd rather him wait.

I'll play. Even though it's been beaten to death already.

    My wish list...

Revised 4.0l - It's in the 2010 4Runner already, so the 3rd Taco will have it.
    Clean Diesel
    6 Speed Auto.
    Trans Cooler Standard
    Temp/Compass Standard
    Power Roll Down Read Window
    Drivers height adjusting seat.
    Gas Hood Struts.
    Better stock tires.

Not unreasonable. Everything on the list is already available in other Toyota's.

Here's another reason Toyota must update the mechanicals offerings in the Tacoma ASAP!:

    http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2010/05/spied-2011-ford-f150-with-ecoboost-v6.html

3.5 liter V6 Eco-Boost in the F150 by the end of the year (2010) putting out ~400 hp and 400+ lb-ft torque. This combination will produce 23 mpg on the highway, at least, which is 2 mpg BETTER than a 2wd Tacoma with the 4.0L at 236 hp.

Toyota is going to lose even more sales to competitors’ full size trucks if they don't step it up!

Typically, when an engine is tuned for a truck, they'll alter the torque curve toward the lower end of the rev range and sacrifice some on top. This "retune" sounds like they are tuning it for a sports car, not a 5000lb truck. To me, it sounds like someone quoted what the ecoboost was capable of on each end of the tuning spectrum. You could probably tune it for 23mpg highway... but it isn't going to make 400hp in that tune. You can tune it for 400hp... but it isn't going to get 23mpg. Plus, full size trucks NEVER get what they're rated at, it seems. Everyone I know w/ a "20mpg" rated F150 or Silverado says they get 17mpg on a good day.

Basically, I'm a believer in physics. No company, not toyota, ford, BMW, etc can defeat physics. Incremental gains is what we'll see until the IC petrol engine is no longer viable. The updated 1GR has quite a few changes that really do improve fuel economy because they directly reduce friction. Roller rocker valvetrain, 0W-20 oil, and VVT on the exhaust cam are all legitimate, incremental gains.

I still want at least a 6speed auto preferably dual clutch, and the fact that Chrysler, CHRYSLER of all companies is upping to 8 speed autos in their rear wheel drive vehicles. Chrysler is the most technology laking major vehicle manufacture I can think of. And they are going to an 8 speed auto and we have a 5 speed auto V6 and an unbelieveable 4 speed auto 4 cylinder in the Tacoma. Toyota needs to step up! I hope they have something up their sleeve.

Here's another application that's going to dual clutch transmissions:

Honda also offers a dual clutch automatic transmission in their utility ATV.

CVT would be better all around. I'd almost bet Toyota is focusing on engineering and shaking down a bulletproof CVT, and you'll just see the transition to that in the next decade or so as redesigns come in.

CVTs aren't very suited for truck applications where the vehicle is expected to tow and haul more than the vehicle weighs

I wouldn't think it would be a problem at all if they just built it beefy.

We're talking about moving a load here. The difference between a loaded truck and a heavier vehicle is immaterial to a transmission - it either specs to what's demanded of it or doesn't. You wouldn't have options like manually selecting lower gears (see below for possible solution), but more pressure on the go-pedal should cause the CVT to ratchet downward on the ratio, assuming the software is programmed half-assed decently. Mileage may suffer some, but fuck it, you're towing anyway.

An alternative solution would be a "tow mode" allowing for manual selection of specific ratios (i.e. lock the CVT at a certain ratio), which wouldn't be too hard to implement but would probably involve more chance of breakage with the added parts.

yeah anythings possible i guess. just looked it up and there's a ton of different kinds. The only ones i've had experience with at the belt type.
