Happy day! My death wobble is gone!!!
I took off my wheels and tires last week to check on my links and make sure everything is tight.

My wife was on Oahu and her truck was at the airport, so i threw the tires back on real quick cause i had to pick up my daughter from boarding school for the weekend, and the death wobble was worse. Way worse. I couldn't drive between 40-45 on the speedo. Which is actually closer to 45-50 actual speed. Faster is fine, but was raining so everyone was driving right in that bad range and her school is 100 miles away...
As soon as i get home, i pull off the tires cause it's weird that it got worse.
I finally realized that there was some slop on the way the stock Tacoma brake rotors fit over these solid axle hubs. And the landing is very small. Barely 5/16" without the rotor on the flange.

Once the rotor is mounted, it's less than 1/8" and the Hutchinson's have a massive chamfer on the bore. The landing might be enough for steelies, which is why the 35s on steelies @Vigo let me borrow ran fine.



The Hutchinson beadlocks are hub centric so they use the shouldered lug nuts, not tapered lug nuts to center the wheel. So the rotors and the wheels were just kinda floating until the lug nuts are torqued. So Anyway, I machined some quick hubcentric rings out of delrin I had laying around, and the truck is smooth as glass. Unbelievable... didn't take any pics of the rings, but they worked great!

And got Goodyear to send me a new set!
But... these are still out of round with a couple of flat spots. Even tire shop said they couldn't get one balanced to spec. And OOR by over 1/32".

 

Wow I wish I was able to get companies to just fix the broken parts they send me. Attn- trail gear

 

Brother... Your're genius!! I'm so glad you nailed that problem that's been a pain in your ass...

 

It would have been nicer to have figured it out and made rings long ago I knew the rotors were not fitting that well, and I made small rings long ago to center them on the lugs, but they didn't seem to help, so I took them out. Now everything is surprisingly smooth.

Aired down to 14-15psi. Stayed mostly in 2wd the whole time. Lots of areas to explore.

Wow you aired down to 14-15? How in the world did you keep the bead on? You have those new method beadloocks?

 

I unsubbed from that thread. I am happy with the Hutchinsons now. I wanted to air down to 8lbs, but my little

$221 viair 400P - 40043 portable compressor kit. tire pump, truck/suv tire inflator, for up to 35" tires

viair 400P would probably have a melt down before fill all 4 tires back up. I have an ARB twin sitting in a box, but I don't want to start installing more electrical until everything else is finished first. Dual batt, camera, switchpros. All that stuff is out of the truck right now...

 

That would be sick! Have all the boys come over for a camping trip.

 

Noooo but we have no proof of them working as described and method isn’t recommending to use low psi from what I’m reading in that thread.

Yeah I wasn't going to be an asshole in that thread, but I have a hard time believing that a couple of grooves along where a bead seats is going to stop it from debeading while crawling and even less so for high speed desert stuff.

 

I think it’s possible to help especially if the bead surface is a slightly larger diameter on the ribs. It won’t perform like a real beadlock. But it may help.

But I have a problem with multiple points made by method in their last post. So many that I am quite annoyed, because I want to dispute them but I do not want to write out a big paragraph on my phone.

Also I can’t get a damn response from Baja designs about some lights. Wtf why do I get such shit service with everyone except ARB. ARB are customer service heroes.

I'll stick with my Hutchinsons. I was happy with how the MTRs rode at 15lbs on this last trip. Smoothed out the bumps enough, and had enough grip that I was in 2wd on most of that adventure. Lots of rocky outcroppings on that coast. I'll try it again even lower once I get my bigger compressor installed. I'll snap pics of the tire on the rocks too.

 

Hate to brag....but I have been at 9-10 psi on regular wheels on my truck while wheeling.

And btw Hutchinson’s are some of the raddest wheels out there. I looking into them for my truck but they’re at least 600 each here. And no one can get them. But I do want some.

Nice! Yeah, expensive for me too with shipping. I've been below 10 on regular wheels to get un stuck in soft beach sand. I think snow and sand is fine, but I wouldn't go wheeling for a longer period of time at those pressures on regular wheels. Especially trails and rocks. I'll drop down below 10 for sure next time.
