Bungee Cord Storage/Organization

OK, I keep about a dozen bungee cords in a very large zip lock bag inside the driver side bed storage nookie cubbyhole. I am about to go insane if I have to untangle this infernal mess again to get the right cord out. Does anyone have an effective way to store and organize these snake beasts?

 

I keep a few longer ones under just slight tension between two bed cleats. I've also got a small round container that fits the smaller ones I have.

Ratchet straps are my normal thing tho.

 

get a couple heavy duty rubber bands, then organize the different sized bungees into groups, then use the rubber bands to hold each size together?

 

I sort of tried that, but I still had to stuff them into something. It helped a little.

 

I keep a ball of assorted sizes in my bed cubby....now with self opening door.

 

This problem drives me nuts, too. I think the only surefire way to resolve it is to cut off all the hooks on the ends, then throw them away.

I ended up bunching the same lenghts/colors together, then tying those together with a simple loose overhand to at least keep the same color/length together. Then I layed them down in a flatish, elongated cardboard box, long ones on bottom, short on top. Layering them in the box at least prevents the ziploc fiasco. This box sits in a large ammo can in the back that holds ropes and rags.

But what a big freaking hassle. I don't use them very often, and now they are a pain to get to.

I think they aren't too useful in general. I like ratchet straps better and a couple just live attached to the bed's corner hooks. I think I just want a few heavy duty rubber trucker-type bungees in a couple lengths.

 

I have rachet straps for heavier items, but every weekend I have garbage bags I bring home from my mountain house - we have bears, so you leave NO FOOD around at all. I use the red and blue bungees to hold them down...there has to be an American Ingenuity solution to this......

Why not get something like a tool roll-up. Fold up each bungee and stick it in a tool pocket. Roll the whole thing up when done.

 

Good idea JKD.....I'll try it. I actually like your idea better than the cord wrap.

 

Yes, garbage bags filled with garbage. Yes, there ARE some things that bungee cords can very effectively and economically manage.

 

Cargo bed divider...

I have 1/2 dozen of them strapped across/around it at various levels. It's amazing how many time I use them strapped to the divider to hold stuff EXACTLY where I want it. Also make grocery trips a cinch... I just run a bungee through the bag handles, clip both sides to the divider and never have to chase soda bottles around the bed.

 

You guys got me wondering. I just got the truck and haven't carried anything in back yet. Where do you attach the ends of the ratchet strap? All I have is the four tie down cleats that came with the truck (and the two D-rings). Do I need the mini tie down loops? Thanks for any info you could sent my way.

 

I keep tie down straps in my truck, rolled up and stored in the rear door pockets. I dont even own any bungies

 

Many of us have installed a second set of D-rings on the front bed bolts. Some have even installed a third set on the middle bed bolts. These are good for attaching the ratchet tie downs to, front to back, side to side, or cross ways.

 

While making a sharp turn I lost a six foot ladder out of the back of the bed of the truck while attaching a bungee just to the rail sliding cleats, the hook popped out easily. I now use the little aluminum key chain type clips clipped to the rail cleats and hook the bungees to those.

I have no answer to the OP's question. My bungees are in piles in the bed and when I need one I pick the color/length etc.. yank, and hope it comes free easily. I have 6 bungees holding two pieces of 18 foot azek boards in the truck right now. a few of my bungees- I've knotted into them red plastic for wrapping onto the end of long lumber, bungee caution flag .

I just recently bought a few ratchet straps, it has been heavy duty bungees only for years.

 

I used to keep several in a round container under the rear seat driver's side compartment but that was a hassle. Now i keep 4 or 5 just thrown in the bed and a couple shoved in the bed storage. Like most others I mostly use tie-downs or bed net but there are some things that almost require a good ol' bungee.

One idea I had was to use the roof rack to store them. Just stretch them across and go. Added bonus is the random tunes you get. I swear they played Ice, Ice, Baby the last time I tried that and got on the highway...

 

Repeat after me: Bungee cords are evil and should not be used for anything more than trash bags..

 

dont store so many in the same spot would be my only suggesstion as these monsters are prone to tangle and make a you fuss and cuss.
