    IMG_20180901_174355_690.jpg Hey,

I have been using the forum for a lot of the research I have been doing for my Tacoma upgrades. I figured I would make an account to join in on the fun and share the progress! Long story short, my wife and I just got word that we will be moving to Alaska this Spring. We upgraded her from a 2011 Mazda 6 into a newer 2016 Jeep Cherokee Trail Hawk. Needless to say, I'm pretty jealous of her new ride.

Instead of getting myself into a brand new Tacoma (and a boatload of debt), I am going to pull some positive equity out of my current Taco and dump all of the money back into her. I currently drive a stock 2010 TRD Off-Road 4x4 Access Cab. I plan to add the following: 3" Lift, Front Bumper, Winch, Wheels, Tires, and some armor underneath.

Here is a list of what I plan to add and will post my progress in a dedicated progress thread in the near future. I would love to hear about anyone's experience with any of these products!

    - Icon Suspension 0 - 3 Inch Stage 3 Suspension System with Tubular UCA - K53003T
    - Warrior FRT Winch BMPR, 05-11 TACOMA, W/D-RING MNTS & LIGHT PLTS FOR OEM FOG - 4520
    - Smittybilt X2O 10K Waterproof 10000lb Wireless Winch Gen2 - 97510
    - 4 x BF Goodrich LT285/70R17 Tire, All-Terrain T/A KO2 - 99728
    - 4 x TRD 17-IN. MATTE BLACK ALLOY WHEEL - Toyota (PTR20-35110-BK)
    - ARB Under Vehicle Protection Kit ARB5423010
    - 2 x Smoked Head Light Housings (Assembly - Toyota 81110-04173)

Please request any specific photos or information you would like me to collect during this transformation! It should be happening fairly quickly... The only thing stopping us is shipping!

Welcome to TW and impressive first post. It looks like you have done a lot of studying. You might want to add a rear diff breather mod to the list. Not trying to spend your money for you but this place will definitely do that.

    Hey Dan!

I appreciate any suggestions! The list is not all-inclusive as far as where I want to end up with it; I thought this might be a good start. I'll have to look into the rear diff mod!

Welcome! So here are my thoughts already...

    1. Go with Kings over the Icons. Digressive dampening is worse (imo)

    2. There are many custom bumpers that look nicer! Also consider aluminum if you want to save weight

    3. Do you need a winch just yet? I'd hold off on it till you need it, and put the money elsewhere!

    4. Those are some heavy tires, but good choice! Also look at the Falken Wildpeaks which are a bit cheaper!

    5. Check out the FN FX Pro rims instead of the Toyota ones. The FN rims are 17x8 +0 which is a better width and offset!

    6. Good thinking getting skid plates, although those ones aren't that strong as they are sheet steel. I would look at Mobtown skid plates which are much stronger!

    7. Nice choice in headlights! Tacoma Beast also makes some really nice ones with a $100 discount code.

All in all, you'll be adding a ton of weight to the truck. Your truck may start to feel heavy and sluggish, so gears may be in your future as well! Sorry for all the critiques, but I've been there/done that.

yeah, watch the weight. these trucks only have like 1200 lb payload, and that includes driver and passengers... anything you add to it is subtracted from the payload.

Sorry @Aim9XXX best of luck with the wife's new ride. I hope there are no issues.
My Jeep Grand Cherokee and my hemi commander limited gave me lot of problems. I do miss the '71 grand wagoneer I had in high school tho.

    To add some context:

I dont intend to rock crawl in the truck every weekend or even attempt the Rubicon. My main objective is to be able to get out in some of the medium to heavy terrain in Alaska and not feel unsure about the trucks capability. Also, protecting against wildlife strikes is a plus!

Tires: should I go down to a 275 or 265/70r17?

Bumper: I just looked at the dv8 bumpers and really like the look plus the additional bar on top. I think I'll go with one of these!

Wheels: the FN v Sema wheel thing has gotten me thinking. But the Sema TRD pro wheels are almost $400 cheaper.... =/ some guys have reported no fitment issues, but I'd be willing to read into failed cases!

Skid plates: See previous context post. I dont expect to put myself in a position to smack any big sharp rocks, mostly stumps. Maybe I'd grow into the more expensive skid plates later on?

Headlights: I like the idea of OEM Factory quality as far as the weather conditions I'll be putting them in... Not sure if that is a super valid concern, just the way I feel.

If traction is a main concern, put an ARB front air locker at the top of the list. I would also install a second battery.

I would also be good to talk to some folks in Alaska to see what they recommend as far as armor and mods.

I wouldn't be jealous I had a 2014 TH and got stuck in the snow at the end of my driveway. My tacoma has never been stuck.

King is progressive, not digressive. I've got Icons on mine and I enjoy them - BUT they're pretty stiff. I think you should go Kings as well with that Alaskan terrain. They ride softer.

HOWEVER... There is a level of upkeep with these performance coilovers and the harsh winters might not be too kind to them. If you're not planning on doing any hardcore offroading a simple OME kit might do you just fine. When they wear out, no need to send the shocks off for a rebuild, just throw them away and replace. It all depends on how much maintenance you want to deal with.
