I did my timing belt/water pump change and the kit came with a new Toyota thermostat. It has a beefier spring on it compared to the one I have been running. I am wondering if the new one (right) will open slower, it is stamped 82 degrees C or 180 degrees F. Should I put the old one back in that I have been running with the skinnier spring?

I would recommend running 170 with a charger. But if both are rated the same, both will open at same temp.

The cooler you can keep the engine, the better the performance

The computer is expecting a particular temp before it goes into normal operation mode. With no thermostat it will never get there. A 180F thermostat is probably high enough.

The one on the left looks like aftermarket, I'm not a fan of those types of thermostats, they usually don't have jiggle valves either but that's not a big deal. Can just drill a small hole to help bleed air but also not necessary.

TRD offered a 160° tstat that was intended to be used with the supercharger but they're discontinued, were crazy expensive, & too cold to use unless you live in desert climates.

170° tstat would be a better choice to use unless you live in extreme cold climates. I live in hot SoCal & run 170° with no supercharger. P/N 90916-03107 for an OEM Toyota 170° tstat.

Engine was designed to run with a 180 stat and the stock radiator probably will not keep
the temps at 160 or 170 anyways unless it’s cold outside. There is an ideal combustion temperature.
I run a supercharger and my engine temperature with a 180 stat are consistently at 185-190.
Even if I ran a 160 stat my temps would still end up at 185-190, it would just open earlier.
With an updated high performance radiator then my temps would go down,
But the wimp stock radiator probably would not.
Stay with OEM as it’s an important part with jigger valve

Toyota decided to use 180 since it would cover all climates. Same as 5W-30 oil. In hotter climates and where it doesn't get extremely cold you can colder on the thermostat & 10w-40 if needed.

Where I live, with the 180 I would reach temps up to 215 on hot summer days going up steep grades. When I ran a TRD 160 tstat many years ago my temps would average around 168 on normal days. With the 170 it stays at 176-182 & only gets hotter climbing grades on hot days, never into the 200s though. With the 180 tstat I avg'd close to 200.

Also the jiggle valve is not required, it only helps bleed air out of the system when filling with coolant. Once bled it really serves no purpose although there is the strange phenomenon of temp change with jiggle valve position in the 3.4L. Drilling a 1/16" hole will do that same as the jiggle valve.

So for the OP, lowering the tstat temp is not needed unless you need it.

Thanks for the pictures for a good reference. Surprisingly the aftermarket one I have been running does have a jiggle valve. But I will put the Toyota one in now.

I was hoping I would hear from you. I am running the Champion radiator after I saw your write up. That will do some good to keep the temps down as well. I feel better about using the OEM 180 degree thermostat now.

I used the OEM 180 degress stat with the Champion radiator and my driving temps
have never gone over 190 degress even with outside temps at 100 degress and
    pushing the supercharger hard.
Traffic temps sitting in traffic not moving when 100 degress have been at 200-210 degrees, but if you rev the engine up to 2500 rpms they come back down right away to 190 degrees

So I put in a 170 degree thermostat, chucked the champion radiator because it failed a year later.
Had a custom radiator made that’s twice the quality or three times as good as the champion and my
temps are now running at 175-180 with outside temps at 95 degrees.
Highest max temperature has been 185 sitting in traffic with 95 outside temperature so far.

    Happy camper

Stainless steel brake lines, Custom leather wrapped steering wheel,
My Champion radiator made it over a year and some 35,000 miles and then it started leaking in two spots between the header tank and the core.
Like others I was disappointed and still as of today the warranty which is valid is 2 months still
waiting for a new shipments of radiators to come ashore.

So last month I decided to go a different direction and have one made.

This is definitely not a choice everyone would want to go because it’s expensive but it’s definitely
the highest quality route with the best performance.

I called 5 or 6 different companies and a custom radiator prices came in at 600-1000 depending.
I went with the EXTRUDED radiator design, more expensive design. If I was goi To do this I was going all the way.

I have had to replace my radiator 5 times now in the last 600,000 miles and this was going to
    be my last radiator replacement.

I had the new radiator made 4 weeks ago or so and had to be sent back two times because of a misunderstanding what I wanted to have done.
Radiator at last is done to my order.

At any rate the new radiator is 2.25” thick instead of 2.5” like the champion so it fits better and not as tight a fit and had the top header tank lowered so there
is more clearances between the hood and radiator cap.

The down fall of the Champion when I compare the two radiators side by side is obvious.
The champion aluminum is very thin. The core fins bend very easily if you bump them.
There is no real structure support to all four sides of the radiator and that means the radiator can move
from going four wheeling and when the frame flex’s that will end up cracking the seams of the tanks.

The custom radiator I had made is about the same size as the champion.
The custom radiator weight is 35 pounds of heavy gauge aluminum.
    The champion is 15 pounds
The stock radiator is 10 pounds.
The custom radiator is welded with thick 3 sided channel aluminum on both sides of the frame and welded to the tanks on top and bottoms and both sides.
The champion radiator header tanks are not welded to the radiator side supports.
Champion radiator side supports are thin and small sections of aluminum.
The Champion radiator cap was defective because of how thin it’s made.
The Champion petcock has a rubber valve instead of all brass that will fail sooner or later.
Custom radiator has an all brass petcock.

So I’m letting any potential buyer to be aware that you probably will have issues sooner or later with the Champion radiator.
The quality is just not there and a replacement under warranty might take months
    if it’s not instock.
The warranty will be void if you take this radiator off road they say.
Reason being is the Tacoma’s frame will flex which is normal but the radiator
is not built to handle any flex and will crack leaving you with a leaking radiator.

My temperature with the custom with a 170 degrees thermostat with the custom radiator are 175 to 180 degrees with outside temperature of 90-95 degrees. In traffic stuck going no where with outside temperature at 95 degrees my temperature is 185 and if you increase rpms to 2000 the temp will drop right away to 175 -180 degrees.
Anyone that has a custom radiator made it’s EXTREMELY important to make sure
the top of the radiator overflow tube is the highest point of the radiator header tank,
If not the overflow design to purge air from the radiator will NOT work and air
will be a problem to remove from the system and will run hot. So don’t have a drop down area for the radiator cap like I did at first and then had to have it changed.
If the system was designed as a expansion tank design then it would not matter

    My 2 cents:
I recently installed an OEM timing belt kit with the OEM 180 deg thermostat on my 01 SC'd 3.4. My coolant temps floated around 200 deg reading from the OBD before and after.
Shortly after the timing belt change, I discovered a crack in the top plastic housing of the original radiator just to the side of the inlet pipe. In lieu of fixing, I opted for a new Champion radiator and 160 deg URD thermostat (~$50 and the URD thermostat spring is less beefy than the OEM). I did trim a small rubber alignment tab on the URD gasket to make it fit better, but it went in without another hitch. Another note, the Champion rivnuts for mounting are doo-doo, I had issues with 2 of the 4, but eventually got all to tighten properly. Next time I pull the radiator I will re-install the rivnuts or use through bolts/nuts.
The coolant temp now floats around 175 deg, with 181 deg the highest I've achieved (after gunning and then sitting at idol). Running down the road in normal conditions runs 174-176 deg, hard conditions 176 deg.
Another note, I put Toyota red coolant back in after radiator swap and this past weekend flushed and put Prestone green as I later read that's what Champion recommends. Coolant temps are identical. Good Luck.

Yup, that what I’m getting with the 170 stat and aluminum radiator too.

My super stat170 stat went bad so I’m going to try the OEM 170 stat now

Thanks for the feed back on that Toyota 170 stat.
