You should grease your brake shoes. I gaurantee they don't lock up again.

Yeah that sounds WAY more seriously than sticky drums. Hopefully it gets figured out and they don't just blow you off.

This was a common 2nd gen occurrence as well. Put it in 4lo and back up, it will release. Also try pulling on the Parking brake cable and sometimes that would free it..

Was there ever a fix, or any preventive steps? Just about to call my dealer to set up an appointment.

Nope but I think the issue is in the parking brake cable rather than in the drums, seems to happen more often after moisture/wetness, and in colder weather, and most often on the left hand side.
There is nothing the dealer can do, and usually it only happens while the truck is still relatively new.

    Oh great

I love problems associated with vehicles being “new”. Who’d have thunk it?

Well crap, that’s way out of line. That sounds pretty bad. That’s a huge safety concern and you should be on the line with the dealer ASAP. Sorry man.

Well.....here we go....time to eat some humble pie. Toyota diagnosed the problem. My drivers side parking brake cable was catching on my aftermarket leaf pack spring straps, causing it to engage. So aftermarket bites back (as always). Apparently tugging on this cable will engage the brake without too much force or deflection.

You can see the shiny rub mark on the cable where it was catching. This photo is before they re-routed the cable:

Glad they figured out what caused it, no more fearing that it would lock up while driving

Posting a pic of how/where they re-routed it to solve the problem (assuming it is solved) would probably be the most helpful post in this thread.

It’s hard to tell from this picture, but the cable is now a good couple inches outboard of the leaf pack strap.

It would appear they adjusted the angle of the two brackets that position the cable:

    Hi Stocklocker,

    It's a defective drum.

I filmed it using my phone and showed it to the dealership's service manager, who contacted the factory. The technician from SE Toyota came down to the dealership and took measurements of the rear drums, which concluded the left drum did not have the right measurements.

They changed the defective part and the problem never happened again!

    Hope this helps,
