Anyone notice a difference in the adaptive cruise following distance after swapping grills? I'm a little curious as to the different part numbers of the pro sensor vs non pro sensor. It must have some effect on the system, even if it's not throwing codes.

if you dont want to read all 49 pages of this thread... here is the Cliffs Notes:

    1. OEM TRD Pro grills are hard to get (but not impossible) so you can either find one or buy a Chinese one
    2. The OEM garnish / sensor cover is required whether you get the Chinese or OEM grill for TSS to function properly (you will get intermittent errors if not)
    3. You can use the factory wiring harness if you reroute it or buy the TRD Pro wiring harness that is slightly longer

Just did mine just like what you have done, so far only one time the light came on but was gone in a few mins. I cut up the front plate holder that came with my truck and use it.

I just finished installing the ebay grille and used the license plate plastic cutout method. I glued a 3.25" x 3" piece to the back of the grille and put the radar sensor behind that. It worked great for about 10 miles then gave me "error - clean the sensor" message.

To fix the error: I cut a second piece of 3.25" x 3" piece of black license plate frame plastic and wedged it between the first one that was glued and the radar sensor - essentially doubling the thickness of the plastic in front of the sensor. Then I added a small washer to the smaller silver screw at the top of the radar sensor to prevent the radar from facing too far downward (vertically). The washer prevented the screw from being tightened too far so that the radar was not vertical.

Just drove across the state. I got an error once about 30 miles in. It went away about a half an hour later and stayed off the remainder of the 6hr drive.

As anyone had any problems taking you Tacoma with the Knock-off grille thru a car wash? Sometimes the wife has my truck and she might take it to one and I'm afraid that maybe it might crack or one of them letters fall off going thru the wash. I use plastic cement to glue them on. I do have 3 coats of ceramic coating with a 9H hardness on the paint. BTW I might follow what Corykowa have done to his grille, which I myself cut out a black plastic piece from the front plate holder I use to cover the granish area of the sensor, but I still get them error's saying it's off after driving 5 mins.

None with mine. The distances remain the same at the different settings.

The second bullet is not 100% true. Granted when I used my Chinese grill, I was having errors at first using the license plate mod method. All you have to do is put 2 thin washers on the two main bolts and 1 thin washer on the top screw. Since I did this, I haven't had a single issue since (1000 miles later). I tested the cruise and unintentionally tested the proximity brake detector. I also didn't like the looks of the shinny grill piece so I tried lots of combos until I found one that worked.

I'm aware. I was telling someone about the cliffs notes from this thread.

in fact, if you look at threads I've started, you'll see a thread I started telling someone exactly how they dont need a OEM garnish....

I dont run an OEM garnish and cut a plastic mud flap up and made a dual layer cover that sits between the sensor and the grill and havent had a single error since.

Just installed a Chinese pro grill last night on my 2018 TRD OR. I'm not a fan of the OEM garnish so I went the DIY route. Instead of cutting up my license plate holder, I used an old plastic paper tray I had laying around in my warehouse. I cut a 3" x 3.25" piece from the paper tray, spray painted it flat black and super glued it to the grill. Drove to the gym and back this morning (~ 6 miles) and so far no error messages. I tested the lane departure and that worked fine. I didn't get a chance to test the pre-collision system but will report back if it doesn't work properly.

How do you guys even glue the plastic piece to the grille? Not really a flat surface there.

I just did the grill mod, easy to do and work great with TSS. I love the new look. I’m new here, cheers!
I did this mod thanks to the research here at tacomaworld, thanks every one.
I also plasti-dipped the emblems and rear bumper thanks to this site!

Just brushed some super glue on the edges of the open hexagon where I attached the plastic cover.
