    I cut some wires here. Added some wires there.
    This is an awesome forum first of all. Far better than any other I've looked at. Anyway. I recently bought an '09 4x4, my first truck ever. The owners manual says to drive at least 10 miles a month to keep everything lubricated. So today I figure I'll drive to work in 4WD. I noticed right away that it is HARD to turn the wheel all the way in 4WD. At first I thought I had a flat, then I turned the wheel a little more and the truck (was idling forward) flat out stopped. I gassed it a little and the back tires slipped a little, almost like I was trying to drive my old Ford Focus over a curb. What's that about? I called the dealership and they said that's normal? It felt like the tires were rubbing when I turned the wheel all the way. Switched back to 2WD and it was fine. Sorry if this is a rookie question, but I'm a rookie.

    That is because it was in 4WD and all the wheels were turning at the same time but trying to go two different ways. It's likely you were on dry pavement - correct?

    you should never use 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. You need to drive on dirt in 4 wheel drive. Snow or ice on pavement would be OK.

    Wow, that was fast. Yes, I was on 'dry' pavement. It's raining, but I realize that doesn't count. So turned that hard the front tires are trying to go dead left while the back tires are still trying to push straight forward. That's not going to happen on pavement where as in some sort of slop the back would just slip a little while the front wheel drive did the work? Am I understanding that right? I imagine so cause that seems to make perfect sense. Like turning the handle bars hard on a bike and then trying to pedal.

    yeah pretty much. When your vehicle turns, every wheel is going at a different speed. Putting it in 4 wheel drive will attempt to make a front and rear wheel go the same speed.

    welcome to tw!! you have learned that dry pavement and 4 wheel drive are a no-no, which is good knowledge. i think though, that if the rain is really crazy and standing on the road, 4 wheel drive should be ok for that also.

    so...what all you planned for your truck anyway??

    :eek: never ever ever ever drive your truck in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. knowing the owner of a local 4x4 shop i have seen tranfercases implode under this circumstance. especially turning on dry pavement.

    I disregarded this 10 miles per month thing on my old Toyota truck with no problems. I would regularly go 7 or 8 months without engaging the 4WD and it worked perfect every time I finally did engage it the next winter.
