Poster didn’t want to stick this on the GFC thread but since were having this discussion there is no reason not to share it. Whoever’s thread this is we certainly don’t want bad info out there about any product so here’s a repost of @danneskjold ’s post

I was just going to clarify those points as well. Yes, the panels and ceiling are a composite sandwiched by super thin sheets of aluminum. As funny as it sounds, the most accurate description is basically aluminum-skinned posterboard. But the stuff is impressively strong and light. Perfect for where it's used.

As far as the construction of the Drifter vs GFC, I don't disagree with you guys. It does concern me a little, but nowhere near enough to sway my decision - the Drifter just fits my needs way better, for a lot of the exact reasons you guys mentioned. And I'm pretty sure it will hold up just fine - trying to run the Baja 1000 with it isn't my style, personally.

To chime in on the mpg discussion, it's VERY subjective with these 3rd gens, at least. Stock, I could average like 24 mpg on my 80 mile round trip commute, and that's at probably 75 average. But (still stock) I could only manage maybe 18.5 mpg round trip from Salt Lake area to LA area at probably 80 average. I know those 5 mph make a difference, but not enough to account for 5.5 mpg...
With the Drifter and an extra few hundred pounds, I still pulled off 21.5 mpg round trip to work today at more like 72 average. But that doesn't happen every day.

What color is the actual roof? I do think part of the thermal discussion was the GFC roof is white and 100% composite so it reflects a good deal of the solar energy. Of course we’re splitting hairs.

What would REALLY be awesome is if a couple people in SoCal (since that’s where all the damn GFC’s and Drifters live could park next to each other with a thermometer in each line the trucks up roof open facing the sun and give us a definitive answer.... if it’s a 25 degree difference Wow... if it’s 2 degrees Who gives a crap... it’d be a neat experiment and I imagine could be completed while drinking some barely and hops to make it more fun. Videoing said experiment would be icing on the cake. Check temps at 10 mins, 30 mins, 1 hr, 2 hr maybe. That should be plenty... maybe it’s a huge difference maybe it’s not at all. We’re all just speculating. Heck maybe the GFC will be way hotter??!?!?

    Any volunteers?????

If there’s a Drifter I don’t know about in NY I’ll provide the parking place and all beer and food.

Anyone have a link to the production list? I haven't received an update in a while and cannot find where they publish the list.

The roof is bare aluminum, same as the rest of the exterior. But the interior ceiling is this aluminum composite (white face), with (I believe 1") insulation between.

Haha, I like the temperature test idea - you know, for science purposes.
...But you would need a second Drifter with the fan running too!

And a breathalyzer. The second part of the test would be to see if the hotter camper allowed the user to sweat the alcohol out faster and be ready to wheel again sooner.

Another one for you that’s pretty much the same angle and distance as your example.

From the replies on here clearly you don't need to Photoshop black onto your truck, I'm guessing you've got a good handle on that one now. There's gotta be a few guys on here that have silver or white on a silver truck so you can see it. What helped me decide on choosing a color was none of the colors actually match, and if you get close it kind of just looks like one of those old guys who has used the same cap on every truck he's had for the past 20 years. If you intentionally go different (to me) it looks better. That said I love the black on all those silver trucks I think that looks great!!!

Sold my 270 china awning and bought a new south africa awning. Also ordered fitted sheets and awning mounts for the gfc. Getting more excited everyday! Oh, and my suspension shipped early so it arrives Friday!

Ok, so if we're really going to do this we need 5 volunteers... 2 GFC's and 3 Drifters.

    Set up as follows:

    1) GFC Closed up completely, (tent up but all other panels closed) beside Drifter set up the same- This will be the true test of the roof/ insulation value of the toppers.
    2) GFC Opened Fully so only the mesh is closed, beside a Drifter exactly the same- Test the passive ventilation of both units.
    3) Drifter opened up however you wanted with fan running- I'd guess this one would be the coolest.... But I could be wrong.

We also need an infrared thermeter to take temps at various points on the roof and around the campers as well as 3 thermometers. One at the highest in the tent, and one about 1 foot above the sleeping platform (to simulate where you'd be breathing in air). The final thermometer could go in the bed of each truck with all panels closed, this would be best if we had several different colored Toppers, compare Black, White, Silver, and bare Aluminum.

I don't think this is too much to ask? HAHA... Though honestly I'd be willing to bet there's about 1000 people who would like to see the results.....

So SoCal Taco owners... Let's get to it.

What did you sell and what did you buy???

I was hot for a Alu-Cab awning but decided against it for a number of reasons. I have a ARB 2500 on the way with a deluxe room. Interested to see what other choices people are making...
