Wow. So far loving the gears. Street driving is just effortless. Truck feels like it is just more willing to move.

So far highway driving is much better. Holds 6th at 65 just over 2k rpms. Then if needed it drops to 5th based on throttle and load. Haven’t seen 4th yet.

Mileage so far is unchanged. Need to get a lot more miles to confirm though.

No. 04B04 TSB update right now.

Once 1.05 is released i'll run that to see how it compares.

If it wasn’t for email alerts regarding new replies to this thread, I seriously would have forgotten to chime in lol

So I’m in the process of extending my current shed at my property. My trailer weighs 800 lbs. I picked up base coarse gravel the other day and asked for a tad bit over one ton. When I hit the scale house I had received 3100 lbs. holy shit! Whatever’s, I was more scared about stopping the truck than taking off.

The 4.88’s are a damn must. I mean, with nearly 4000 towing lbs, she sure was no rocket. However, she sure in the hell was no plug! I’ve had supercharged 3.4’s with the 7th injectors before, and they pulled this exact same trailer not as easily. The gears really help and I was very impressed for what the Tacoma is.

Very slow on steep hills up until 20 mph but once baby girl got moving it was easy peasy. Overall, happy camper

If you want to feel the power and get rid of the OEM crazy shifting get the OVTune (Auto or manual trans). I have 4.88 and OVTune - tow my camper base 5280 elevation and 11,000 plus every tow - average 17.5 mpg loaded and towing (use S mode) and no issues. 22 mpg city average. 4.88's combined with OVTune are the answer.

I would like to. I actually don’t have very much complaints after my regear; it is a truck afterall.
I honestly would love to read the OVtune thread, but it’s soooo fricken long, I honestly don’t have the time and I spend a lot of time working, studying for work, or family (not in that particular order of course). If OV makes a locked thread, with all the concise info, I’ll take a stab at it. Like I said, it was hard enough just for me to leave my feedback regarding towing if it wasn’t for email alerts hahaha

Yep that thread is a long one - some on track and some off. Best way to know without purchase would be to find someone in your area that has it and go for a test ride. Toyota has made a few improvements to the issues with their TSBs - but they don't "fix" the problems and you have to hope and pray the Dealer will install them (unless you have the ability to do the flash yourself). The OVTune incorporates the TSBs and OVTune modifications to the ECU/TCU - all of which make the truck drive and respond the way you would expect. The tune also adds 20-25 HP and about the same in torque with the 91 octane tune. I run 87 octane normally and even that has more power. I was skeptical at first when it came out - but found a local who had it - I was sold after that. FYI - find a local who has and will loan you their OVTune OBDII. That way you save $$ on the install.

Good luck and enjoy the truck!

Thanks for the reply my man!
Didn’t sleep at all during my 24 hr work shift so whatever downtime I had I read a page or two at a time for the OV. I realized I never used my ECT button (came up a bunch with ECT vs OV) at all when I towed...or after I regeared for that matter. I’m just so comfortable and happy with how it is, I just didn’t think about even pushing the button while towing
Next time I’ll tow I’ll try to remember to use the ECT button and see how I feel.

Only thing that’s holding me back is not enough guys have the tire size or tow when they wrote their review for the OV. I’m gonna lurk more and patiently wait to see any long term affects

i'll be towing a jeep tj in 2 weeks on a trailer about 400 miles. Not running ovtune until 1.05 so i'll be using the tsb. hoping the truck performs better than my last tow. using 1.04 and stock gears towing a enclosed uhaul netted me 12mpg and stuck in 4th.

i'm hoping with the gears and tsb tune it'll hold 5th on flat roads.

Staying tuned new to the scene, gonna go through the thread and get caught up. In the mean time my Nitro 4.88’s came in from those cool guys out in Cali.

Definitely keep us updated. Try with and without the ECT button as well to see if there’s any significant difference as we please. I forgot to do that on my last tow..
