what happened to toyota?

I bought me a 2009 Tacoma 4 door 4x2 because I have always liked Toyota trucks and I really like the body style and I thought that a 2 wheel drive would get the MPG that I want, but if I would have known that I was only going to get 21 MPG in a 4x2 then I would have bought me a full size truck. Toyota trucks have always got good mileage, not anymore.

 

so you didn't know the milage when you looked at the window sticker?

 

21 mpg is better than what i'm getting. they are advertised to get 17/21. did you not do research before buying your truck?

I would be thrilled with 21mpg. Get a full size and then see what your MPG looks like.

 

I can't speak for chevys cause I refuse to buy goverment motors, but go test drive a ford even with the v8 and you will see they are dogs. Took my buddies f150 v8 up camping while I was looking for my tacoma and it preformed less than satisfactory on hills, suspension wise, and a few other areas. My tacoma has no problem up hills on the way to flag and that pullin a quad and the bed loaded.

I love my tacoma and wouldent trade it for chevy/ford/dodge/nissan. JMHO

 

You have a double cab Prerunner, it's heavy, plus you have the V6, you think 21 is bad? I say you are doing well considering the configuration. I get 23 with my 4cly 4x4 reg cab, but I knew I would get better than what the window sticker stated when I bought my truck because I did my research by talking to people with similar trucks. I think maybe you should have researched your truck a bit before you purchased it then you would have known what to expect. You titled this thread “what happened to Toyota” did you have a double cab Prerunner in the past that got better than 21? Do you know anyone with an older truck with a similar configuration getting better than you? Please explain further.

I do have 265 75 16s but will the tires make that much a difference. They are barely bigger than the stock ones... any input would help

 

Could be your driving habits too, how hard are you on the gas starting off?

 

You have to remember a Prerunner is not a way to achieve the look of a 4wd a truck, with the fuel economy of a 2wd. A Prerunner has 4:10 gears just like the 4wd with the same size tires, it will get similar mileage. I say "Similar" because it does weigh less which will allow it to get slightly better fuel mileage than a 4wd, but not much. Sorry for your disappointment.

 

Are you correcting your odometer displayed mileage for the larger tire size or using a GPS to get your mileages between fillups?? That'll do a huge amount for you.

Example- I have a 1.07 correction factor- so my odo shows 100 miles and say I fill up with 5.68 gallons of gas. 100/5.68 = 17.6 miles. If I correct my mileage now- 107/5.68=18.8. That's a HUGE difference...and I went from 265s to 285s.

 

its basically the same size as stock. just a tad taller. when I put this size on mine, i hooked up my gps, and my spedo was right on the money, so i would say his prolly is too. so that problem isnt a problem. just my .02

stock size 265/70/16 no big difference

your size 285 = big difference

 

This is a debate that I'm sure will never end- Did you check your ODO as well?? I only went "a little taller" and it changed my numbers like my example shows. As the assembly turns the tire ONE full rotation- "a little taller" equates to more distance traveled, but the truck measures the same one turn and says "there is one turn- we should have gone X distance and it took Y time- so we are going this fast"

Also- Was your digital speedo signal correct or was your needle correct?? I'd argue that your NEEDLE being correct doesn't matter if you digital signal is off...and I think that is what is happening when people say their speedo is right on.

Edit after tires sizes were added:
That's a full 1 inch difference in diameter and a 3.28 inch or 3.4% difference.
So with my math before....
100/5.68=17.6
103/5.68-18.2 that's a .6mpg delta...That's alot.

Interesting- So you scangauge (or other output) showed the same speed as the needle. Did it show the same speeds before the tires?? And what kind of radar did you use??

 

Not that dissapointed, just concerned there might be somthing wrong with the pickup I just bought

those two posts say it all....hell Toyota.com even rates the mpg for the 4x2 DC Prerunner at 17/21mpg
The Tundra gets 15/19mpg.....not sure where these numbers are considered GOOD....
