I replaced the OEM Johnson Control battery with an Odyssey because 1) they are poorly made and 2) they are not sealed and leak acid when off-road. Why Toyota puts car batteries in off-road vehicles is a conundrum.

Any reputable and knowledgeable mechanic will have a carbon pile battery load tester that will determine the viability of any battery at anytime. Those that rely solely on electronic type analyzers should stick to doing brake jobs and tire changes.

Mine was starting seeping fluid, took a pic and sent to the service manager, bring it in for TRUSTART Toyota battery, no questions.

@GARSHA91 A true deep cycle won't like the high amps required to start the vehicle. A dual purpose might be what you want.

I've had my battery replaced once already. The current one looks to be causing corrosion on the battery clamp. I'm thinking I'll eventually do some type of sealed battery in the future.

I use Odyssey batteries in my airplane. I typically get 7 years before any hint of weakness.

My battery was showing a lot of corrosion at 12k miles. Finally at 18k I had trouble starting the truck. Dealer had to replace battery. That was my 8th trip for problems with the third gen. My ford battery lasted 8 years if you can believe it.

Damn, I just had this happen to. Such hot garbage.

The dealership was clueless as well.

I just went with a new battery instead of having them replace the battery with the same thing.

My miles were at approx 20,000 too.

I feel you man. I have been a little disappointed in this 3rd Gen as well. I traded in a Jeep Wrangler for it which had Zero factory issues the time that I owned it. I don't want to be stranded though, so I just replaced the battery with something I know will work.

I have always had terrible experience with Optima. Seems like their QC has gone down in the past few years.

True, I noticed mine is leaking a bit on one side. 25K miles, daily commute plus very mild offroading. Need to clean it up ASAP, and plan on replacement. But GAAAAH I just blew $300 on a battery and alternator for the kid's 4runner.
