@Snowy came in with a clutch ( ) idea of using a ratchet strap to alleviate the lifting and weight of the t case end.

 

Jeep CJ's "back in the day" had a removable transmission access panel above tranny. You could lay a 2X6 from the top of the windshield to the top of the roll bar and use a ratchet strap to lift tranny/transfer case. I changed more than one clutch single handedly. Help has a way of being hard to come by when you need it the most. Bought a Horrible Freight tranny jack years ago just because it was cheap. Only used it once. I use it now to jack up the front end of my riding lawn mower to sharpen blades and clean mower deck.

 

Someone mentioned a chain or strap through the shifter hole. Just didn't see it going well. Little room to stand and straddle the hump and really put some ass behind lifting it straight up

 

Jeeps tend to be designed to work on repeatedly. Almost like they knew what was coming. Toyota's tend to be more of a challenge sometimes.

 

But...Heeps are the soccer mom's easy to mod and bolt-on chrome isle "I offroad at the mall" vehicle. Tacoma's take some effort and instill a bit of pride in it's ownership and modifications.

A severely modified Jeep wouldn't even wake up Ron Jeremy's dick.

 

Motorcycle jacks are absolutely perfect for lifting the trans/tcase and keeping it level for you. Never needed it on the Tacoma though, not sure if you can find one that would go that high

 

Not sure I even know anyone close by that has one. Thought went through my mind about 100x

It's a mix of muscle and finesse mounting the trans and t case together, that is certain!
Got at least one, different, coworker coming today to help. He's a firefighter, not one of those fat ones. And he's done this same thing before several times.

 

Saw one Saturday I'd own....JKU 4-door style, mostly aluminum body, with LS7, Currie axles, Marlin crawl box, 42"'s on beadlocks, full cage, plus more. Owner said he had over $65K invested.

 

Truck moves under it's own power and shifts gears as it should! So pumped!

Gonna drive the Avalanche one more day. Double check my torque on everything, outside of the trans, tomorrow after work then back to normal. Whatever the hell normal is

Honestly, hell if I know. Thinking something was misaligned, had to be. But wasn't something that made a noise or vibration when out of alignment.

Only things that changed from Sunday night to last night:
1) Bled the clutch
2) Pulled cap off resi before compressing slave for TO fork, to make it compress easier. Didn't do that first time, just muscled it in.
3) Different person aligning the trans/t case

Granted, I did take everything back out, except the pilot bearing, and put it all back in. I don't know the exact tolerances of things in the real of Yota clutches, but maybe it was enough to fix it.

Just because it's aluminum doesn't make it light. Rolled a little the first time pulling it and lost about a quart of MT90, luckily had plenty left over on the shelf.




It's been warm once or twice. You can clearly see how much holding the clutch/TOB against the pressure plate I was doing. Engraved the fingers.



Like age spots. Some large, about quarter-sized and bigger. Some as small as a grain of rice. Light discoloration, not too many waves or grooves I could feel. But I knew I smoked it VERY WELL at least 3 times, needed some abrasive love.


Now this, this is where you can really see the colors and hot spots!


Lots of meat left on both sides of the clutch, but my eyes see material failure. Like a worn out piece of sandpaper. It also felt brittle and crackled any time it was picked up. One or two of the springs was also a little loose and rattled.

I probably should've got it resurfaced on a machine, but I feel I did a solid job using some 160 grit sandpaper to start, then finished off with

$18 3M Large Area Paint and Rust Stripper, Step 1, 4"es, Pack of 1

this wheel I had left from refinishing my PCd rear bumper. Then hosed er off with brake cleaner.


There was a point I was ready to burn it to the ground and fuck the lemons, bail!


Well, at least it's pretty to look at. Even if no one ever sees it.


Clean and new and shiny-er. Lubed for your pleasure.







And that's all I got. Er, gonna show. The rest is asinine and not really needed.
I did notice a few discrepancies between Gid's write-up and what I encountered. Different year models, same drive train. Toyota changed one or two things all, nothing major, but still noteworthy. We can compile and condense and he can update his thread with post-2008/09 2.7 MT truck differences if he chooses. Otherwise, I'd be glad to help any other 4x4 4 bangin gear smasher with what limited knowledge I have on a pain in the dick clutch install

Glad you got the clutch done and working. I wouldnt start telling people it's a 4 day job though. I do it myself everytime in 6 hours, never separating the trans and tcase, using only a floor jack to remove it and install it and never having alignment issues or gear shift issues afterwards. I don't say all that to make you feel bad but a competent first time person doing this should be able to do it in 10 hours or so. You didn't have any "problems" to speak of. Just sounds like rookie mistakes. Hopefully I helped some but being there in person def would've been much easier to help step by step stuff. Having said all that, I don't remember the first trans I replaced but I'm sure i didn't do it in 6 hours. I bet it goes better next time. Hopefully that flywheel holds up. It needed to be resurfaced. It's not about making it shiney again, it's about making it perfectly flat again. So the whole disk presses against it evenly. You couldn't have fixed that with a buffing wheel.

 

The most time consuming part was getting the trans back in. Both times. Correct, in no way is it a 4 day job. Doing it twice was, for me.


Total time spent for round 2, with smoke/food/piss/drink breaks was about 8 hours tops! I made a lot of rookie mistakes and back and forth to your thread to keep checking I did it right. Many many times.
People did keep asking me about problems. There weren't any. I just didn't know what I was doing and was teaching myself along the way. It's called "education" and I don't think people got that part (friends and coworkers). And the trans is just heavy and awkward af! Learning tips n tricks to support that weight and align it at the same time. I'm sure I'll learn again the next time around.
Yeah, probably should've just had it turned again. Having the 2 guys that helped in person who have done this type of thing before was monumental, but not as good as you helping through text and phone calls. Did a lot more than you think. Connor too.

I will say this; what little bit of back n forth I did in the driveway, grabs like a mofo now! Dream come true! Pedal actually isn't any stiffer in feel, will want to adjust because got worn and used to my style of dealing with shitty OEM clutch/pressure plate/tob

 

I think its badass you did it yourself with no experience otherwise. Like I said, I started out that way too, just like any knowledge Connor has or your friends that helped have, they started out ignorant with no clue how to do anything. That's one of the reasons I enjoy helping. If you want to learn, I want to be someone to learn from because when it's the other way around, I hope people are willing to help me. Best you can do now is learn from your mistakes and be better next time. Good job dude.

And yeah, I know that feeling of a new grabby clutch. Very exciting. Haha
