A while ago there was a picture of his Facebook page that said he gained 30whp on a 93 octane power map with 1.05. He hasn't addressed the picture yet

Well as it stands now, if you are not on the latest TSB calibratrions you can flash back to 1.02a/b/c, 1.03, 1.04 if you had the files. He hasnt said those people wouldnt be able to flash up and down. If you have the TSB calibration, then you have 1.04R and the future 1.05 as your 2 options (with the octanes and what ever other maps Mat provides with 1.05).

I would agree that it may be possible to flash back to 1.04r from v1.05.

But Mat has stated that the TSB modifies the data files the tune uses and relocates them in ECU memory. These data files are used by the original factory-tune ECU programming, as well as by the OVTune programming. Once the data files have been modified, the older tune versions (OEM and OVTune) can no longer understand and use them. My understanding of what Mat has implied previously is that the older OVTune versions do not rewrite the data files in the ECU, they only rewrite the programming. Soon-to-be-released version 1.05 will rewrite both the data files and the programming.

This is a really silly thing to be going back and forth on. Matt has been tagged already. Wait for his response since nobody knows for sure themselves, about the ECU ID debacle.

Now where were we... oh yeah... is it "soon" yet?!?

Right about 2,200 miles on B04 (TSB) and have been intentionally driving without the tune for quite some time now to get a true sense of the changes Toyota has made as well as measure objectively how the calibration changes over time (learning, etc.,).

    • Truck drives just fine with the TSB, and if there were no tune available I wouldn't be pissed about it like I was on prior stock calibrations
    • My low-speed ignition misfires (often 10-15 per drive cycle stock or tuned prior to B04) have been basically eradicated (maybe a single misfire or 2 per drive cycle now which is normal)
    • Transmission learning still happens, but it isn't annoying in the same way. It still doesn't race to 6th in city driving, rarely see it go above 5th unless I'm on the highway. It will jump to 4th and 5th pretty quickly and try to achieve a 1,000rpm cruise speed - which used to annoy the piss out of me. It annoyed me b/c the truck would start losing speed, then punch the pedal, pick up speed, then the dance started all over again. Now if it's "lugging" in 5th at 1,100rpms it is maintaining steady speed like you'd expect from an A/T and downshifts to pick up speed don't have a lag. not quite as snappy as 1.04, but the tradeoff is they are smoother while still being pretty quick
    • Every now and then it does seem to get confused about which gear to be in if you're feathering the throttle for whatever reason at slower speeds but very rare. Also had the delayed downshift clunk coming to a stop cold happen 2x early on but have not had a clunk at all since that time...
    • Tip-in...actually exists. Not the same get-up-and-go of the tune, but touching the skinny pedal does now equate to instant response - but very smooth. On prior stock calibrations, the delay on the skinny pedal was dangerous and made for driving in city traffic frustrating.
    • Smoothness can't be understated for me. I have yet to feel a single jerk or harsh engagement of gears / torque converter in all the miles I've clocked on B04 thus far. My truck isn't as fast or quite as "fun" as it was on 1.04, but it feels healthy and balanced throughout.
    • MPGs are about the same as they were on 1.04 - around 19-20 in the city (1.04 had increased this from 16 stock to around 19 so the new TSB is on-par)
    • Even though I'm not tuned (until 1.05) I continue to run VPower - tuned or not, my truck has always run better on premium and I'm fine with the cost for a better driving experience.
This coming from one of OVTune's biggest fans from the early days. Mat Wilson is the reason I still drive a Tacoma and didn't trade it in a year ago out of frustration. today though, I'm not racing to put 1.04r on my truck and will await 1.05 happily at this point. hopefully it brings back some power while maintaining the smoothness of Toyota's latest effort. I have a feeling 1.05 is going to make a lot of people happy!

But seriously, if you haven't updated to the latest Toyota TSB I do think it's a worthwhile comparison to make for yourself and helps you more objectively gauge the quality / improvements in 1.05 when they drop some day

I agree. I put about 2k miles on B0400 before going to 1.04R. I say, give 1.04R a go before 1.05 comes out. It is B0400 with power!

I'll look at mine in a bit (canadian truck) but I think it says "87, or 91 whichever is available" which makes me think I should be running 91.

My manual says "Octane rating (Unleaded gasoline): 87 (Research octane number 91) or higher"

87 AKI or (R+M)/2 is equivalent to 91 RON

I have over 4k miles on B04, and I agree with your assessment 100%. If the truck had shipped this way, I would not have even been looking for an alternative tune. Still, looking forward to 1.05, which I expect to surpass Toyota's tune in several important ways.
