TRD+Tow package or yamaha edition

Hey guys,

new to the forum here. Looking at buying an 07 tacoma soon. Needs are changing and I'm coming from an 04 Mazda3. I've been at the dealer and have looked at the truck. The only tacoma I've driven were the old gens and the X-runner (that was a fun truck to drive).

I'm looking at the brochure and was wondering what everyone's impressions were for the TRD + Tow Package and the Yamaha Edition. I'm from Canada by the way so there maybe some things different than from the US.

I don't do offroading though I don't know how long I could hold back on that..hehe Primarily it'll be my daily driver to and from work and I'll be using it to haul things now and then. Plus I'm up in the mountains quite a bit cause I do alot of skiing in the winter time. I don't know about towing anything but it would be handy to have if I needed it. I'm leaning more towards the TRD package as it comes with a lot of goodies. The ones that have caught my eyes are the auto tranny cooler as well an engine cooler.

I'm also having a bit of a rough time deciding between the 6sp tranny or the 5sp auto. I used to work for Toyota years ago and I've driven pretty much all their cars with the autos and they have been great. I've owned 2 tercels with autos without problems. My current car has a 5spd and I love it! When I drove the 6sp x-runner, I was pretty impressed with it. I like the manual tranny for its control and I like to change my own gears. Hoping into an auto...i get a weird feeling. I was brought up on autos.

Sorry for rambling on but for those with the double cab and access cab, what are your experiences in terms of comfort for people sitting in the back. Any troubles with a car seat for either?

I definatetly recomend the TRD package. I don't know enough about the yamaha package to advise you on that one. As far as tranny's go its just personal preference. I was brought up on manuals and have fun with them but i fell in love with the tacoma's 5spd auto. Its the one of the smoothest autos's i have ever driven. I think manuals are fun in small sporty cars but i like having the auto in something big. I have the double cab and wouldn't recomend anything else. i can fit 5 people in my cab, 4 comfortably. no one ever compains about being cramped. if you have anymore questions feel free to ask

 

I am also in the market for a Tacoma. I am coming off a Tacoma, a 4Runner, and now a Tundra Double Cab. I am planning on getting an Access Cab Taco and here is why: I have had a DC Tundra for 3 years and I can count on one hand the amount of times I have had more than my girl and my dog in the truck. I like the way the rear seats fold for the dog in the Access Cab Vs. the Double Cab (the seatback is plastic and will get scratched up, as well as, being slippery).

As far as the OffRoad package goes, it sounds like that would be a winner for you. The Yamaha package looks like it is a glorified version of the Sport package here in the state. The only real difference is the 'coupons' you get towards the purchase of a Yamaha.

 

TRD is the way to go, but the tranny cooler comes with the tow package not the TRD, so I would recommend both. The auto vs manual, like nd said personal preference. I like the 6 speed, it's easy to drive, but sometimes wish I had the auto, manly when sitting in stop and go traffic. The auto is rated for better gas mileage but if drive a stick well you'll get just as good of miles or kilometers in your case. As for the room in an access cab, if your planning on driving any full sized adults around they will not be comfortable in the back, they can fit but will not want to be there long. The main reasons I got the access cab was b/c I like the way it looks better than the 4 door and I didn't want people asking to drive when we go to lunch or something. .

 

The yamaha edition does not come with a limited slip differential, tow package. Also smaller alternator and battery, no stereo controls in the steering wheel. No automatic dimming rear view mirror. Not a big difference in price considering these upgrades alone cost $3000.00+..

 

Just to be clear these are not included in the price of the TRD as well except for the limited slip rear if you go with the sport package. The tow package comes with the bigger alt. and tranny cooler (cost about 750 American), the steering wheel controls comes with the 6 disc changer (about 200) and the dimming rear view is separate I believe.

I just got back from a test drive in an 07 double cab TRD+tow package. I drove the 5spd. Very smooth....reminds me of the old 4runner (well the engine is from the old 4runner) but the tranny was a lot more refined and had less of an abruptness to it.

Definitely like the way it drives. I don't feel like I'm driving a truck at all really. Seat is very comfortable (I like them a lot better than the previous years). I didn't find it rough at all even though there were a lot of people complaining about a stiff ride with those shocks. Also noticed that with the MT vs the AT....the box in the MT was about 1ft shorter than the AT.

For those in Canada. Were you able to negotiate the price of your truck? If so, and if it's not any trouble, would you be able to post the price you paid or you can shoot me a message or something.

I live in Alberta and could not really wheel and deal. To much in demand! Somebody behind me will pay more if I want a deal... Received a few free add-ons though. Tax included my fully loaded trd sport came too $43,000

 

at least you've saved one tax. hehe I'm in BC....2 taxes..ugh.

Well if I get a price that's below what was quoted on the website i'd be pretty lucky then eh?

My dad is trying to talk me into a 4runner.....too much money for what the suv is. Don't get me wrong, I love the 4runner but the features the tacoma has beats it I think. This is comparing the 4runner SR5 v6. He's thinking that when I have kids, it'll be a pain to get them in and out but with the double cab, it shouldn't be a problem. It's got more room than most I thought and I fit in there quite comfortably. Realistically though, I can see it turned into a daily family hauler in the future...not that it's a problem as I'll have the best of both worlds.

Having read through some of the threads on here...seems like most do not regret their purchases.

 

WTF is a "Yamaha Edition"? TRD Sport rocks but the tires stink on the snow/ice. AT is nice and gets good mileage. You can still change gears with AT if you want (I do) for more control. Check my pictures for MSRP info.

I have determined that the stock tires on almost all of these stink on anything wet or icy.

Yes, stock tires suck, I had ATs and MTs so for I gotta say I love the handling of the ATs on pavement, but its a different story off road.

 

the yamaha edition is baically the SR5 edition...well a glorified one as someone has put it.

You get:

TRD exhaust system
17" alumininum alloys with wheel locks
front sport seats with driver lumbar support
digital compass
outside temperature gauge
hood scoop
special edition badging
400w cargo bed power outlet
back seat pockets
fog lamps

You don't really get a whole lot out of it. After staring at it and looking at the options with the TRD + Tow package, that is the better deal. You get so much more and the stuff is a heck of a lot more useful than what comes with the yamaha edition.

well I went back to the dealer and test drove some other vehicles....highlander and 4runner. Disliked the 08 highlander...found it noisy (more so than last year's model..the road noise that is) although it was a base model. The 4runner...I like it alot. For the amount of money, the tacoma is the better buy IMO. I liked the way the tacoma drove a lot better. Not that I didn't enjoy the more luxurious feel of the 4runner. Gonna go back in a few days or so to do another drive. I'm leaning quite heavily on the tacoma right now.

 

If I were you I will definitely go for the TRD 4x4, I live in Mexico and I could only get the TRD 4x2 double cabin, that is the only model available here; after five months and seeing what the TRD 4x2 is capable of I wish I could go off road in a 4x4; I lived in Toronto for a year an a half and I wouldn’t mind ride a TRD 4x4 to the office every day or in the weekends in the wilderness of Canada, I’d do that all the time with out hesitation. I’m not sure how the confort is the back of my truck because most of the time I’m the driver lol … but so far I’ haven’t received any complains from anyone so I guess the comfort is ok, I’ve only heard from my friends that the truck is way to cool!!!..

 

You have a office in the wilderness? If I had an office in the wilderness, I'd grow weed and buy myself a Yamaha Edition Taco. More exciting that being a gynaecologist, I must say.

haha yeah the TRD edition is what I'm settling on. The yamaha edition was too plain. I'm getting pretty close to making the decision...I'm just in the process of reverting my car back to stock so the dealer can do a proper assessment of my car's trade in value.

I didn't realize it till I visited this forum but pretty much all the tacos that I was lookin at had the bilstein shocks on them.

 

Themaster, I hate to be the one to ruin your plan, but I don't think being a gynacologist is all that you think it is.

Example: When I took my part time job as a mechanic at the local bike shop, I thought this was going to be the best gig ever. That I'd get to work on $8000 S-Works, and Orcas, and Treks all day long. You know what, if I get one of them into my work stand a week it is a good week. Mostly I wrench on shitty old beach cruisers, and flat tires on kids bikes, and 20 year old schwinns that are not worth the money people are putting into them.

I kind of think the Gynacologist suffers much the same fate. I am sure that most of them think wow, I get to look at hot naked women all day, but the not hot ones have all the same parts as the hot ones, and still need to come in for service.
