Hey everyone, I'm new here but not new to the Tacoma world. I'm on my third one which is a 2018 Tacoma DCLB Off Road which I recently purchased and after driving it a few days; I immediately noticed the issue with the transmission.

I took it in today to Auto Nation Toyota in Austin and explained the issue never mentioning the TSB and my service advisor new exactly what I was talking about. He said there's an update available for the issue. So I left behind at 7:30 am and by 11:00 it was ready.

I immediately noticed the difference on the drive home. It's shifting a lot better. My MPGs did drop from 18.9 avg to 17.8 which i'm fine with.

Tho I do have a question about the update. On the paperwork, nowhere does it mention the TSB 58 or 62 update but instead it states "found update for ECM. performed software update".....is this the same update? I asked the rep and he said he didn't have the specific number for it.

He also mentioned they had done 6 updates that morning and mine was the 7th and it was only 11:00.

Below are the issues i noticed before the update:
    - it wasn't holding gears (1st and 2nd)
    - it wouldn't shift after cresting a hill
    - at times it was 'searching' for gears

    Anyways hope this helps

Seems very odd that they don't list the TSB# or OP code. This dealership must make so much money they don't care about getting reimbursed from Toyota for this work. If you say it feels different and you trust they did the work, I wouldn't be too concerned about it. If it were me, i'd sure like to see something official on my paperwork.

been driving on 62 for about 1k, I too believe it has re-learned some of it's old habits after a while. However, my butt dyno says that putting it is s5/6 cancels the learned behavior and reverts back to how it was right after the flash. Holds gears longer, shifts as expected over hills etc. I've seen opinions going both ways on this, and I know that throwing it in D and having it drive like a normal vehicle is preferred and a reasonable expectation. Good advice above to file a claim, but in the meantime, slide it over to S and try it out. Only issue I still have with it is upshifting going around corners and some bucking/torque converter cycling on/off? when under load.

The reason I used 0062-18 is because they can’t replicate the high altitude. So then they are forced to do the flash and not say we drove it and it last normal BS. It worked for me, I got the flash and they didn’t have to drive my truck around all day.

I had 62-18 done about 700 miles ago and I feel it already going back to what it was before the reflash. Definite loss of mpg as well, 1.5-2.

Exactly. People are conflating the relearning with the TSB.

Just got my truck flashed with TSB 0058, and I must say I'm impressed. Drives a lot better and the transmission holds gears longer with better shift points. It almost feels like the ECT is on. Also, I got mine done at Toyota of Cedar Park in Austin, TX (Leander) without hassle or test drives (to replicate issues). Definitely recommend them if you are in/near the central Texas area. Lets just hope the truck does not revert back to its old ways.

You are correct, imo. As I've said, it's still much better after the tsb, even though some re-learning has occurred since installation.

The learning part of this truck has to be retarded and confused.... which does it learn, City driving or highway driving. Both are completely different in most of the country. Stop and go vs maintaining a decent average speed. I am in the city and no 2 commutes are alike. Does it learn differently only on short trips like 1 to 2 miles vs the average 30 mile commute this truck seems to need to get proper fuel milage..

Those are all questions I've asked myself frequently. My conclusion is that the learning isn't working as intended for me... if it was, I wouldn't end up thinking it's a wonky transmission. But maybe my driving pleasure isn't the intended outcome of the learning process.

Have you tried driving around town in S4 (under 30mph) or S5 (over 30mph). It's a completely different truck. Depending on speed, when driving in those two modes, the truck drives like you'd expect a normal vehicle to drive in D (well, pretty damn close, anyway).

Important to note-- 2nd gens also "learned" in D. This isn't a new thing.

After having it done yesterday it was fine till I got about a block away from home after driving it for 4 hrs in the city running errands . The downshifts are pretty harsh at times coming to a stop sign/light 3-2 ,2-1 . OVtune it is I guess .

Stock suspension, stock wheels, stock bumper, stock, stock, stock, dammit!
My ac blower has the death rattle, and the part is back ordered two months.

Between that and the transmission, I am thinking about sticking ford badges on it.

Okay, no, its not THAT bad, but :annoyed:
