i went through the same mental battle when shopping for rear bumpers but ultimately decided the BSM and Sonar was not big enough of a deal

 

Same, I didnt like the idea of de-featuring the truck and my wife really likes the BSM (mainly because she is a bad driver) so I struggled with it. Ultimately we both decided that BSM had to go. I dont even drive with it on anymore. I figure I will keep the stock bumper if I go to sell or something.

 

To give a manufactures perspective; the problems with designing a bumper around them are many.

1. The sensors radar field of view cannot be interrupted by metal. That means in a steel plate bumper they have to be mounted near the surface, either not covered, or protected by a plastic of some kind.
2. Their size means that the side wings of the bumper will have to be made larger than otherwise necessary.
3. They will need to be mounted at the same angle as factory, thus further complicating bumper style and function.
4. Even if we deal with 1-3, which isn't impossible, we can't do the kind of testing that Toyota does. HUGE liability if our bumper mounts the sensor 1 degree off from OEM and that somehow causes some random crash down the road.

It's just not worth it.

It's a shame Toyota didn't incorporate into the taillight assembly instead, like Ford did.

 

And Jeep with the new Wrangler. Made it a ton easier for us on the Jeep side of things.

 

Yup, this is why I wish they put them in the turn signals like Ford did

 

So the task at hand is not to put them in the bumper, an aftermarket company needs to make new tail lights with them in it. Then just swap lights. DONE!

That's jeep though, where they already did all the work and cheap companies just had to copy it and tweak aesthetics. For someone to do that for a Tacoma, it would require starting from the ground up and be A LOT of work, meaning the lights would be very expensive, plus the liability of it all. Just doesn't make sense from a business standpoint. Have you seen the BSM sensors? They're freaking YUGE.

 

My point was, it was not a crazy idea. It is already being done.

 

I think it's a crazy idea to attempt that on a tacoma, due to the fact they weren't designed like that from the factory (unlike Jeep). That's just my opinion though, and you know what they say about those.

 

This place here already makes Tacoma lights and BSM lights....I am going to contact them on maybe making a custom light.

Have you guys looked at the calibration procedure? The service manual calls out the allowable directions it can be pointed. Once the that is confirmed a corner reflector is placed at a certain position and Techstream does the rest.

Everyone says "be a better driver" but I am with BSM. Because why do a head check if BSM says there's something there. I've taken my eyes off of the road for less than a head check would do to confirm the same thing. If there's not BSM indication then I do a head check to prove it's clear. It's only more dangerous if you assume BSM light off = clear. But I use it to tell me not to even bother. I can move my eyes and see the light.

 

Well put, my ZL1 has it also and is useful with its limited rearward visibility. If it is on, I don't bother looking until it is at least off. I am wondering if someone switches that BSM off like people on this thread are doing or it is disabled with a steel bumper, would that not setup that person for a liability case in court. MMmmm. the judge might think so.

 

How would disabling the BSM set someone up for liability? Have a scenario in mind?

 

I'm not sure how a bumper that accommodates BSM sensors would expose anyone of liability either. The system tells you when it's not clear. The system does not tell when it is clear.

There are three states, not two.
BSM On = not clear.
BSM off and no visual check = unknown.
BSM off and visual check says clear = clear.
