Is there an inexpensive obdii reader that is NOT Bluetooth that will allow you to make changes to the truck's settings?

(In addition to showing the calibration ID's).

In my case my mpg has stayed the same luckily.

I also did disconnect the battery for half an hour this morning and everything got reset.

It felt better, just like after the TSB but it also wasn't a huge difference. Maybe I was overestimating the degrade after the learning, but either way is still way better than it was on stock.

Just drive in S4 or S5 off the highway to avoid 6th, depending on speed. I find the worst condition is about 40mph on a road with small rolling hills, where you can't speed up and pass. Still downshifts to 4th for each hill, but just a little more speed and its fine. S4 is good here. My mpg has actually improved slightly, either from downshifting less or just the engine breaking in. ECT mode still feels the best.

The carista app or techstream are the only ways to make changes to the truck. There isn't just a simple obII reader. You need the app, program too. There are several versions available fairly cheap.

Thanks. I know about carista and the Bluetooth ones. Just wondered if there was a hard wired one that would allow change of settings and have full functionality indefinitely.

I've customized my screens so it might not look exactly like yours... but can anyone tell me exactly what the "Avg Fuel Economy" is?

Is it all around average for the life of the truck?? If so, I'm really surprised. 2500 miles and I'm not a heavy footed driver. My "per tank" average always hovers right around 17.9. And obviously, the per trip is self explanatory. That one is usually 16-17.

So why is this Ave Fuel Economy one so low?

Avg fuel economy is what you get per tank if you clear it to zero everytime you get gas. Otherwise it is the avg for every tank since it was cleared last.

i wonder that too. Mine will be 14mpg when I am driving through noting but school zones and barely using gas. Then when I am driving normal speed limits, it is higher.

I've never cleared mine... so, my overall average since I got the truck is 15.8mpg!?

After a talk with the Service Manager and Customer Relations person at the Dealer, I finally got the TSB 0058-18
done. After test driving, I have to say that all my hesitation and stumble I have had, along with the endless shifting problems have all gone away! It is so much better than the day I bought it! Finally, very happy with my taco!

Overall it's an improvement. But don't expect it to stay like it is right now.

No 15.8mpg was for that 3.5 mile trip.

There is also "average fuel econ" which is overall, and "tank average" which resets each time you fill up.

Beware, if your truck loses power they will reset!

Did an experiment this AM. Kept truck in S4 for the entire commute. Guess what, only a .4mpg drop in Trip Avg milage, and a much better driving experience. The engine just seems so much more natural running around the 2k range than lugging at just over 1K trying to pull 5th on a 40 mph hill before a downshift. Now it only shifts to 3rd for the steeper/slower hills as it should. As someone who drives a vehicle a lot and keeps it awhile (why I buy Toyotas), the lugging and short shifting don't sit well with me. I question this trans lasting to over 230K like my Tundras driven like that, and lugging is no good especially for a new engine. The trans alone will have more than double the shift cycles on it compared to the Tundra or even my wife's Honda Pilot, which is a 3.5L similar in power.

Average fuel economy isn't the overall average of the life of the truck. I've never cleared mine and I have 25K miles. My "average fuel economy" changes quite a bit tank to tank. It's normally around 22mpg. If I have a lower tank average it might drop to 20mpg. Then a bit later I have a good tank average and it's up to 23mpg. No way 20 gallons at a lower mpg would have much effect at all on 20K+ miles of data.

For example, 20K miles at an average of 22 mpg would be about 910 gallons of gas. Let's say my next 20 gallons I had an average of only 10mpg so only 200 more miles on that take (it's never been that low). I have a total of 20200 miles and 930 total gallons. I'm now down to only 21.7 mpg average. However, after a tank of gas with an average of as little as 19mpg my "average fuel economy" might drop to 20.5 mpg or so.

I've been trying to figure this out for some time, but it's not tank average (separate screen for that) and it's not life of the vehicle (or last reset) average either. I'm wondering if it's based on something like that last 1000 miles or something.

BTW - yes, my tank to tank averages are around 22mpg. Mostly stock and I drive somewhere between conservative and maniac.

How is the tech supposed to check for the update? Just click "Health check" or is there some other way? I'm going back in today and want to be armed with some info from those who have done it. He said nothing came up when he clicked "health check". Thanks.

They perform the Health check. It asks them which computers to check. They tick the power train option. If the Calibration IDs are outdated there is a clickable link that says UPDATE. This link opens a page that shows every TSB that can be used to upgrade the calibration ID. The tech will read all of these. Once he finds one that applies to your truck and condition used to justify the update they click on the appropriate calibration ID linked in the TSB PDF. Then they run the Calibration Update Wizard from the file they just downloaded.

So from the dealers perspective it's not just as simple as clicking the update button.

I drove on TSB about 1K and have to say that drivability is worsening. 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 shifting is no longer smooth, especially during city driving. Truck sounds different too.

It seems that the pedal sensitivity is reverted back. MPG is about the same, however last night I drove wide open road that I usually take daily and that trip mpg was the same when I drive during pick hours

I guess I'll wait a bit longer to see if things improve, otherwise OV 1.05.

I dunno man, mine never fluctuates like that. Other than the couple times I've reset it, its damn close to life of vehicle
