Highschool is formative? Maybe, but that reminds me of our HS valedictorian giving her speech at graduation. All I remember was her going on about how these were the best years of our lives, and to cherish the moment etc... blah blah blah.

My only thought is that if those were the best days of our lives, damn we peaked early, and I'm pretty much fucked for the rest of my life.

Not high school specifically, but that last year or so when you're deciding on what you want to do or where you want to go in life. Once you hit your 20s and get out of college (or 30s even), you still have that freedom/choice but there are usually more strings or consequences attached to it.

Give five full loads out either.

    That’s an extra expensive habit.

I was actually on a monogamous relationship with my (now wife) the entire time. She was on the pill.

No need to wrap it. :luvya:

That's always a tough convo to have with a girl when you first start dating...the "you know, we don't need to use a condom since you're on the pill" conversation...takes some smooth talking and patience lol.

....and some paperwork proving you don't have the herpes

My Valedictorian was super depressing. Said something along the lines of how some of us probably wont go as far as we'd like. Nobody even knew she existed, and we were like who? when they announced her name. If that tells you how anti-social and nerdy she was, wonder if all that studying has paid off? You know, the having no friends or life part just to get a 5 min speech at graduation.

yeah I remember when I went to my first school, we sat in the auditorium and listened to this chick tell us to "look left and then look right...you more than likely will not see both of those people in your graduating class 4 years from now". She ended up being right, and I was one of the ones that dropped out lol. I ended up getting my degree at another school a few years later though, turned out to be a blessing in disguise actually as the first school got shut down for illicit business practices.

The honor kids are ,95% folks who figured out how to game the system or have a parent thats a teacher and 5% folks that actually give a shit or have been culturally shamed into giving a shit.

Nope, Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara.

Ended up getting my BFA from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena instead, thankfully.

For sure. I just think it's pretty unfair to tell an 18 year old they should "decide" what they want to do in life - when they they have never had to even cook for themselves or live outside their parents' bubble.

I remember the HS guidance counselor was like YOU NEED TO DECIDE NOW - COLLEGE IS EVERYTHING - THERE'S NO TURNING BACK!!! (said the lady who I'm 100% sure didn't "decide" to be a guidance counselor until her mid 40's after various failed career paths)

I was caught up in the "must finish what I started" thing with my engineering classes. I was a stubborn SOB and wanted to finish, even though I stopped caring and was failing classes.

Its a system. I worked it. Honors classes were a joke in my opinion. Now, the early college/AP courses were kinda hard. I passed both the ones I took. Yet those credits didnt do me any good in colllege as they are History credits.

It's hardly the only one, just the most famous one. This is what happens when profit comes before education.

yeah I agree, I had the whole "college or homelessness?" mindset put on me when I was growing up. To my parent's credit, a college degree meant a lot more in the workplace for them when they graduated than it does now so I can see where they got the idea. But my kids will most definitely not have that idea put in their heads, I'll definitely press for continued education in some format but college certainly is not for everyone. Trade school is a great alternative if you know what you want to get into, for instance.

Or in my case, photography...I built my career through assisting and working alongside successful, working photographers. I didn't need school for that, though the degree is nice to have it came at a very high price.

I did AP calc. Got a 3 on the test. Actually made the transition to college calc a lot easier. I was already familiar with a lot of the concepts.

IF all those honor and AP classes are taught by the right people, they can make a world of a difference. I had some really shitty teachers where I did almost nothing in class and still got an A, then others, like AP Calc where I worked my ass off for a C+ yet still look back fondly (20 years later) on that class and the teacher.

I dont regret taking them, it did prep me for what to expect in college. Its just that I took AP classes that arent required for my major. Makes me mad knowing I couldve slacked off some senior year and took easier honors level courses. I do regret not taking pre calc in high school though. I had to drop that class in college and take a easier trig class to prepare for it. Probably will take pre calc again next spring and hope I do better.
