The idea of running Cliffhanger scares the shit outta me for many reasons, but having to be right on your shit with your clutch work is right up there at the top.

I know wheeling down south is a far different than out there. But down here having a crawl box would help a ton! Being able to go slow on certain obstacles would be great, much better control and not hopping around which causes things to break. I plan on getting one down the road (read ways down the road) unless I get some funds randomly.

I very very VERY much want to come do all of that. I swear I will.

Nah just did it cause the clutch was slipping. Figured what the hell.

Now I think I need a bigger pressure plate though with the boost..

What's your plan for a rear shock relocation? I've been researching it for the past few days and haven't been able to come to a conclusion on how I want to tackle it...

I put my crawl box in when I was IFS on 33s and my DD on a 90mile round trip daily commute. Hands down worth every penny.

    Nothing new, really.

Basically planning on running a tube crossmember for the upper mounts up as high as possible, and then using some shock mounts that I got from Ruff Stuff for the axle side. Shocks will be inside of the frame, but outboarded as much as possible. I also want to get the shocks vertical looking from the back with maybe some slight layback looking from the side. The exhaust will have to be rerouted because the passenger side shock will be right where the stock exhaust is right now.

Also, I highly suggest cycling your leaf springs BEFORE you buy your shocks so that you can get the right shock travel and compressed/extended length. I didn’t do that, but I’m pretty positive that the 10” Kings that I bought will cycle just fine as long as I keep the upper mount as high as possible.

    TL;DR, I’m basically copying Brett @Squeaky Penguin.

This thread is also helpful as well:

Ha took long enough to mention the hybrid mode the manuals have.

I climbed most of this obstacle with the starter. Fun stuff! It's impressive the amount of control you have.

Yeah that was pretty much the path I was leaning towards. I was really hoping to get something that sticks the shocks outboard of the frame, like the Solo Motorsports relocation, but the tire clearance issue kinda worries me. Not that I'm in a position to ball out on some nice shocks right now lol. When you do get around to doing the relocation, I'd love to help even with just bitch work so I can learn some stuff for my own truck...

All of this. More control in the super jagged rocky sections are where the crawl box really shines. That and getting up ledges that are steep and slippery which we have a ton of out here in the east coast. But honestly I felt the 5.29’s really accomplished what I hoped it would do, and that would delay the need for a crawl box for MOST wheeling, and it has. It wasn’t till I hit this trail where I finally started smoking my clutch a bit and had me wishing I had a turtle box.

    https://youtu.be/skKBab2vSlc

The only downside is you really need to be extra careful about locker usage in the rock gardens where you can get a tire bound up. A bound up tire with a locker on and extra torque from a crawl box can add up to carnage real quick if you aren’t careful.

I’ve got the marlin crawler clutch and would love to know how they compare. Honestly it’s put up with a ton of abyss but the video above def had it at its limits.

My favorite part of that run was where that became the go to move for @Reh5108

Appreciate the kind words. Didnt think anyone actually paid attention to my build lol

Wheel a properly setup solid axle rig and itll change your hole perspective on things. Can go as fast as comfortable as a decent mid travel rig with more dependability and better ability to crawl. Even in my leaf sprung junk.

Then go wheel/crawl an automatic. Huge difference and makes it that much more fun. Easier control in the rocks. Less chance for body damage. Easier on parts. If your stuck on manual and really plan on crawling REAL hard trails on the west coast (hammers, rusty nail in moab, maze in sand hollow, or Rubicon to name a few) I'd say get a crawl box or even a 2 speed atlas with a 4.3 or 5.0:1. Similar to being an auto as you have better control so easier on parts. No bashing and body damage from slipping off a line becomes minimized

With all that being said each setup (lt or sas) had their advantages/disadvantages. My take is a sas eliminates the inevitable to fail parts of ifs (steering rack, cvs, lbj, etc.) And just makes a more capable rig whether it be 35s or 40s.

And my final thoughts are I would not hesitate to jump in my truck and drive it across country and wheel the hardest of the hardest trails and have a blast and not have a second thought on it. Lately its been a trailer queen but that's purely comfort due to non friendly oversized tires, aftermarket bumpers, (which every rig in this conversation has both of the above) and the high chance of breakage on the trails I run. But there was a time I didnt have a trailer and I drove it everywhere even dailyed it

And a departing picture because sas and big rock
