Just to clarify my post and to give reason for the kill. We had three bears visiting our neighborhood and had two bears frequenting my house. The last time it came in my yard as my wife and kids were playing in my yard at 12 in the afternoon. The bear walked out 50’ from my two year old and walked right through my yard. My wife chased it off. It was back the next day and is now in my freezer. I am an advocate of bear spray and respecting wildlife. However When your home is threatened, guns have there place. Just felt the need to share the reason for leathal force.

dont be apologetic. if there was a human child sex offender prowling the are you would have called police. A bear....freezer time.
Our tribe reveres the bear. However, we eat bear while respecting its dangerous power every year.
Do not apologize for protecting your kids. There needs to be more Dads like you.

Just wondering, but why not put a fence up? I mean shooting things is fun and all and feeling like the manly man for protecting your family is great I'm sure. But I've lived around bears my entire life and never had a problem. And I don't consider a bear walking through my yard a problem or a reason to shoot it. Now don't misunderstand I'm not trying to be antagonizing or anything, and when it comes to black bears in my area they get shot because they destroy crops and I'm totally fine with that. and I don't know how big your property is or what it's adjacent to. But it just seems like shooting it only solves half the problem. The problem seems to be theres a bear track through your back yard.

We have lots of black bears in every neighborhood in Western NC. They are never a problem. Every few years someone will move here and get scared or something when a bear is near their yard and shoot it. Black bears don’t want you. If you see one leave it alone. It will not be there long if there is nothing to eat.

Bear spray is illegal in Yosemite NP or Sequoia/Kings Canyon NP

    https://www.myyosemitepark.com/things-to-do/no-bear-spray-allowed

    https://www.nps.gov/seki/learn/management/lawsandpolicies.htm

These are the two areas with the highest populations of black bears and bear attacks are rare and no one has ever been killed by one in Yosemite or anywhere else in California (with the exception of one trained bear that killed it's handler)

    https://www.travelyosemite.com/discover/travel-tips/bear-information/

If you see a bear yell, bang pots and pans, and throw rocks at them. They will leave, and it will help them to learn that people are not a safe easy place to get their food.

I live in Alaska. I have an acre lot in the middle of an old growth forest. Living among the wildlife is part of living up here. I have a lot of experience with bears. Brown and black. To assume a black bear poses no harm is not a good idea. Last year there was an attack on a teenage boy who was in a race and was killed. It was a black bear. When a bear becomes comfortable and not scared of being around humans this creates a problem. It is known by bear researchers and behaviorist that black bears are known to hunt humans where as brown bears only attack in defense. This is why you are supposed to fight for your life in a black bear attack and play dead for a brown bear attack. To say Black bears pose no risk is very bad advice. As stated above this was one of three bears that were causing problems in our neighborhood. Lots of warning shots and once I chased one down the road with my truck. If u had a bear in the middle of the day walk that close to a couple of loud playful children you know this bear is too accustomed to people. The majority of the time they will come through and be on there way. I’m sure that they probably got into someone’s trash and this is unfortunate and is why it’s so important to take care of your shit I love and respect all wildlife. But there is def. a time where action is needed. I backpack and camp in bear country all the time. I do not even carry a gun when doing so. I rely on bear safety and follow all procedures in bear country to avoid associating humans with food. I carry and am an advocate of bear spray and have seen its positive effects. This was a great teaching moment for my older son in respecting nature and giving thanks for the food it brought us.

I live in an area with a lot of black bear. For the most part, they are afraid of humans, so they un-ass the area quick, and wild animals are pretty low on my risk radar outdoors. But that doesn’t mean ANYTHING. Just because ten bears walked away doesnt make the eleventh safe. I used to live in mountain lion country on the west coast, and my logic hasn’t changed- There are guidelines and rules and laws for larger wild/predatory animals, “bear mace or no bear mace? Can I shoot or not?” “Is this can of deterrent legal here”... there’s only ONE person responsible for your (or your families) survival should things go south in the middle of nowhere, with no immediate emergency services, no ranger with a rifle, so only your rules should apply.

This is awesome. I thought that might have been footage of up here. We had a black bear in the lobby of one of our hotels last fall.

Your chance of being attacked by a bear is greatly dependent upon if you are in a location where bears frequent.
