I do very large scale gardening I work for Weed Control Science at Texas A&M University

 

Ive been finding some paper wasp/hornet/yellow jacket nests around in my travels hunting. Some say they predict what winter will be like...so far Ive seen 2 low to the ground and one hanging off a stick on the bank and one old one that looks like maybe last years up high in a tree. Anyone have any wives tales about this?

I've always figured it was the same as the length of the black stripe on a Wooly Bear Caterpillar being a predictor, lol.

we dont have many of those around here but wasps/yellow jackets etc we have an abundance....

 

Note that Wooly Bears and Wasp Nests are conspicuously absent

Man o man! I went through more of this thread, and some of y'all have MONSTER gardens! And kudos to you for all that home grown good! About 2012, I got a metal frame, UV plastic cover 6 x 8 x 8 to winter the pool side plants. Because it does freeze here, and long enough to kill them off, unless planted. I killed the long story - I discovered I could make a spring hot house, uncover it, have a summer garden, etc. Every year, I change something - it has more mods than most our trucks! Anyway, today was a clean up, and some fall prep. The veggies did not really appreciate over a month over 100 every day, followed by rain every day since Labor day (NOTHING like Florence). So, I had 7 tomatoes, now 4. Still have 8 peppers, and 11 herbs. Dumped all the stressed lettuce except for 2 Kale. It's goal is only to feed two, and keep me entertained.

So, here is the cleaned South side. Tomato, Pepper, herbs, and Kale. Bottom shelf is the Hibiscus cuttings that will be repotted, and hopefully sold soon.

Here is the cleaned North side. The remaining Peppers, herbs, and Kale. Bottom shelf is the "rescue" plants - including the Cuda Cat catnip, and 4 with Passion Flower fruit seeds I am experimenting with.

When I cleaned out the herbs, I came up with this today. Maybe I can sell them to a local restaurant!

Here's what it will look like a week or so before Thanksgiving.

I could do a build thread just on the versions of the greenhouse!

 

ours was quite watery I guess. We had 2-6quart pots full and she reduced it down to about 7 quarts. Takes a long time to process?

 

I usually keep mine in the canner for 40 minutes once it comes back up to a rolling boil.

 

These got away from me.

 

Grape vines bounced back in good shape from the beating they took last winter. Going to have to do some major pruning back once they go dormant this fall.

yeah My wife found one that says to process for 50min...dunno why.

 

A 10 minute variance like that isn't too out of the ordinary. Maybe it was for quarts? I only make pints, but I'm sure the time for quarts is longer.

When I pressure can my soup stock it takes 25 minutes for quarts, but if you include the venting time to purge the air out of the canner and then the cool down once the time is up to let the pressure drop back to atmo they're actually in there for well over an hour.

You should try the modelo spicy picante. They're awesome.

 

Well, it took a couple days to get back to it, but ALL the Hibiscus cuttings were transferred from the color pots to their own 1 gal pots. By next spring, or a little sooner, I hope to be able to sell them at the farmers market here. 28 plants! And one repot of really small ones that hadn't made good roots. Seeds from the Mexican Bird of Paradise bush will go in shortly, and I have about a dozen Passion Fruits that have been knocked off the potted plants. Going to look up how to seed those tonight. And YES, I did sell my bags of herbs for a big $6! At least they got bought by a real chef!
