I’m going to give an example of good use of multiple comm formats, in conditions very different from small group, off-road park situations.

When we did the NE waterfall trip this spring, there were three doods that took the HAM test and passed just prior to the trip. And they outfitted themselves with HAM radios: two high power mobile units and a couple of upgraded UV-5r’s. @m603holden @pmstoy10 @Grand dude

It was a fairly large event which we broke into 2 smaller sub groups of upwards of 8-10 trucks each. We split the 4 HAM equipped trucks evenly between the two groups.

For my sub-group, most of the trucks had CB comms, so we had a HAM equipped truck in the middle of the pack and another at tailgunner position.

Communication was mainly by CB, but since the front CB couldn’t reach the tailgunner of the sub group, the mid-pack HAM relayed to the tailgunner any missed comm from the front. It was a nice way two communicate with a large 10 truck sub-group spread over a mile on the roads.

And communication was much improved between the two sub-groups that were separated by several miles. Especially since there were high powered mobile HAM units and external antennas that were in the mix.

Legally powered CB’s would never have that kind of range in same/similar conditions.

Best $15 I spent in a long time. And to be honest I hang at 10w and still end up being the primary comms over illigal overpowered cb.

    What's up peeps
Can anyone recommend a tuning shop in the central area? I need to dyno the truck to dial in the methanol kit. I have gone to a few places around here in linden and nobody wants to touch it.

I've been sitting @ 5w only because I still haven't put a SWR on it to make sure I don't destroy it, but even that gives me pretty good range so far.

Worked out awesome. Now I need to add a CB to my set-up.....and next time we need enough trucks for a 3rd subgroup :)

Wouldn't be too worried if you have a semi name brand antenna. They come tuned pretty well. It's not like a firestick with a screw on the end

Good point. It's a diamond. Should be good but just want to make sure. I have all the gear just haven't gotten around to it.

Yeah. That 15 buck test is relatively easy. Test questions are from the same pool of questions that have been around for many years. My 7 and 9 year old niece and nephew took it a few months ago and did fine. I got them a pair of Baofeng BF-F8HP 8 watt handhelds for Christmas.

I'm not sure but I'd be shocked if they dont. Mike is the owner there. They're old school guys but very good at what they do.

@Subway4X4 Do you have any links to sites to study for the test? I have a BF-V9 coming today that I was planning on using to scan, but why not just get licensed as well.

Where are all you guys located BTW? I'm in Morris County.
