Did another thing tonight. Got the Ham radio mounted using a cradle @coke can made me, ram mount hardware and my own mounting plate that I copied from another member here on TW. Forgot his username but he sells them in pairs for 65 bucks and I only needed one and I like my money.

 

Is that radio connected to a standard coax cable? Like a CB cable out to a fire stick?

 

Uses your standard coax however is connects with an NMO mount to the antenna. This one in particular is a VHF antenna. I’ve got another cable ran for my CB antenna that’s also mounted up front. Each band has its own specific antenna that works best.

Is there something special about that mounting plate we're not seeing? Looks like another part I could easily print for like $1 or $2 lol.

 

Wait did I miss something? You can 3d print? I had shapeways print me a clip mount I designed.

Mounting plate is fairly thin and the holes are tapped to accept a 1/4-20 bolt for the ram ball. Not sure a 3D printed part would be strong enough.

I can definitely do the threads, and even thin stuff can be pretty strong, but thin threaded thin things could be a stretch. Haven't played with short load bearing threads yet. Looks like the head of the bolts would hold most of the pressure anyway, wouldn't they?

If it's easy for you to measure the thickness and test my part, I can make one just to experiment with, but I guess there's not much incentive anyway until someone else needs it and it's hard for you to make.

 

Nice! That must have been printed on a very expensive machine, or did you do some finishing to its surface?

 

No sir that is the way I received it. It was pretty precise as well. Perfect match to my model. Even the embossing I had in the model.
