Back Up Light Installation Link and BS Thread

Hey, Folks.

I tried searching and I know someone has done it, but I cannot seem to find the post. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to find the post / thread where someone installed a flush mount backup light in the spot to the right of the license plate. The post that I am thinking about showed the light pattern and coverage.

That's mine in the pic but I didn't post any beam pics. That's the diffused lens , I would go with that one for reverse light duty.

One final question. My plan is to use this as the sole back up light. Did you have to hook up to a relay or is the stock power good to go?

That isn't it, but I didn't think about those locations either.

I tapped into the trailer harness and it works fine. The ignites pull so few amps you could do two and still have no issues.

Thanks! But, the light needs to either fit in the open spot to the right of the license plate or on the non-painted part of the bumper. I don't trust myself when cutting into painted parts. I also don't want them hanging down below the bumper caps.

I saw a pic somewhere here where a person used that spot and had great lighting at night, even to the right. I've searched as best that I could with no luck.

There is a cutout in the steel section of the bumper by the license plate that would make a great first try. As a back up plan (haha!), I'll get more for the non-painted area and use that first location as an Aux light running off of non-keyed power.

 

Yeah, understand exactly what you are saying. I have a set of the rigid ignites (frosted) planning to do similar, but haven't gotten to it.
(Want to remove backup lights from the 2 main lenses, convert backup light location to turn lights (amber). Then use both tail light locations as tail/brake lights rather than our stupid half the light system we have now... but probably never get to it.

Right now, I would try to fit these guys in, due to cheapness... (yes cheap bastard)

That is exactly my plan! Beyond seeing them in my driveway, I've followed a few Tacos down the road and have not been pleased with the partial 'C,' esp after the much better setup of the 2nd Gens. At least it is one light for one function, but ambers should be a requirement.

I am a cheapass myself. I will check the dimensions of the steel cutout.

If anyone else is going down this rabbit hole with me, here is a pattern that I made for the Ignite Flush Mounts. It will print to scale on 8.5 x 11.0 paper.

 

Have you thought of upgrading the stock back up lights? They had something like that for Landcruisers. I'm thinking of going that route first.

 

Sort of. This is part of the tail light mod to get a full "C" brake / tail light. Amber turns are going into the stock reverse light locations. This Ignite is going to be my sole reverse light as a first try. If this doesn't work out, esp for the camera coverage, I will get two more and mount them in black part of the bumper just outside of the middle step and use this original as a non-keyed work light.

This is the first time that a used a stepped bit (go Harbor Freight!). It makes shit like this too easy:


I cleaned up the hole a bit more after this pic (not shown):




As seen in the other links, this particular light is great for that location. Although, note that the included mounting screws and nuts are SAE and are about 1/4in too short. There is a bit of gap between the plastic and the metal part of the bumper in this location. It is thin metal, so I used the BFH with a plastic drift and with difficulty was able to get the left side to catch a couple threads.

In typical defeat, I'm going to grab some longer screws on the way home, maybe even metric.
