The biggest issue with D for me is the upshift to 6th on a 45-50 mph road, and then back down at the first small hill. S5 eliminates that. Just moving that 6th threshold up a lot higher would make it really good. FWIW, I'm a software engineer. The new calibration in firmware almost certainly does not revert. The variables in the program that are permitted to change within limits (learning, self tuning) may but the code no. Also, remember that whatever they may do in the future must be bound to EPA requirements, so somewhat limited there. As Moondog stated, this is the new age of ATs. My nephew has a Jeep GC with an 8 speed that has been reflashed and still has issues. My wife's Pilot has that system that shuts down 3 cyls., and when you hit the gas they come back on along with a converter unlock and downshift, its a much rougher delay than the Tacoma. Personally I'm just so used to driving V8 Tundras since 2001 everything might just seem worse than it actually is.

This is my experience also. Even going 65-70mph the transmission is constantly shifting between 4th and 6th. This is with an empty truck. I can’t imagine towing anything. I need to either re -gear to 4:30 or install the OV Tune. I’m pretty sure both would void my warranty.

Just got the updated calibration this morning at Fred Anderson Toyota in Raleigh. My service adviser Chris was excellent. He listened to my concerns and told me that they would perform a health check for software updates on the ECU. Normally I wait to do this sort of thing at my 5,000 mile service intervals but went in at 12,500 miles since most people were having so much improvement. My visit took about 1.5 hours but I was also having them test drive for the rear diff whine issue.

Will wait to see if the update helps. I already had the 0300 calibration before this visit so I'm not expecting as large of an improvement as others with the 0100 or 0200 calibrations. During the short drive home I think the truck was still figuring things out as part of the fresh ECU reset hopefully it will settle down and learn good habits throughout the day today.

So since I’m fresh off of ECU flash, what if i start driving fast/quick. Would the ECU learn based off of that and keep as much of the new uodated feel as possible?

Maybe not a solution..since it continues to learn i guess..

OVTune is undetectable at a dealer, your Cal ID will still show a factory flash code.

not sure how the 4.30 gear would effect your warrenty, adain, I doubt they could even detect the change at a dealership.

Not sure I follow. I had the original one done a year ago that fixed some shifting issues and that CAL ID ended in .......0300. The new one ends in ......0400. They gave me a before and after report from the Techstream.

Nah just drive like you normaly would. You're not gonna "beat" this system. We really don't even know how it works for sure. Some guys will tell you to drive like you stole it for 2k miles to teach it who you are. I'm not on that bandwagon. In the end, I just don't think it matters.

You answered this before for me about the ECT having same effect in S mode as D. But what I am confuse by is someone posted that the ECT learns just like D. So if that is true what overrides when you have ECT on in S mode which has no learning mode not sure then if learning is off or in?

Need to understand the design of this ECU.
Whatever you do, ECU will stay within its modeled range. ECU calculates user's input (pushing pedal for more power, etc.) and checks against the model. If you power, torque, etc. are exceeding predicted model, ECU limits those inputs.
    Read up on OVtunes explanations.

I am unaware of ECT learning. I do know ECT changes the throttle mapping and shift points though.

I'm picking up the truck in the next few minutes. The guy a the desk of the service department of Jim Pattison (Vancouver BC) was a little bit of a pain - telling me that I would have to have a drive with the service manager in order for him to see the problem. I politely asked him if he was going to drive over the mountain pass with me in order to replicate the problem. He was a bit persnickity but said the manager would ride with me.

    I said 'sure' 'no problem'.

5 minutes later the manager came over and said they'll take it in. He knew there were already 3 updates since I bought the truck - even told me that the most recent one was released on July 31 (Canada).

I'll report after I drive it to Kamloops over the Coquihalla this afternoon.

Thanks that answers it I have switched it on and off (ECT) in s mode with it on the throttle is notably increased. It even burnt rubber from a stop light with both S and ECT on which I never try to do. It caught me by surprise thanks for the thoughts on this

Just bought my truck less than two weeks ago and my Cal ID is 896630A6000. Based on that can anyone tell me how out of date the ECU is?

Trying to understand all of this. Thanks!

You have the calibration before the newest update which is 896630A6100 for the 18s.
