Took the Taco in for the transmission reflash. Still feels a little slugish when changing gears and sits a little low in the rpm range around 70mph. Feels like it slows itself down too. Not sure how to pin point it. Felt a little better after the update but as I kept driving it felt as if it came back.

Other issue is a little vibration between 50 and 70 mph. Havent felt any while braking.

Is this in my head, or is this a common thing on these trucks.

Its my first one so im not too familiar with issues or stuff I should have the dealership fix or look at. Any input would help.

    I have an 18 TRD Off Road V6 4x4 A/T (175 miles). No mods.

    TIA.

I’m assuming you checked if you actually received the update? Not the invoice, but via the OBD2.

There should never be a vibration. Doesn’t matter if the vehicle has 175 miles or 175,000 miles.

Agree on the vibes. Shouldn’t have any.

As for checking the software, a code reader, (Bluetooth or otherwise) will do it. You’ll find the version under the ECU code.
The difference from before and after upgrade should be easy to feel. Wouldn’t be the first dealer to say they did something while really not.

Not in your head. My Tacoma has had 3 software updates and it always drives a little better right after the update but then after a few thousand miles it ends up driving like crap again. This is just the way the truck performs with this simulated Atkinson /Otto and the transmission software trying to squeeze out every last MPG. I don’t even get that good of gas mileage either so don’t feel like it’s worth the lazy performance. Also you will notice a delay in downshifting when you try to get power from the truck and it just feels like you have to keep your foot in the pedal all the time to get her going.

I agree I felt the same way when I got my truck between the trans and the mini diesel sound coming from under the hood I questioned what I had bought but I agree 5k and things start to adjust. It’s like the trans learns your driving. When I first got mine coming to a stop would feel like someone rear ended me an that has stopped. You will feel the gas slosh from back to front if you stop right.

Should stop “learning” somewhere after 1k miles. That’s where I was finally content with my truck. I didn’t enjoy it much until after 1500 miles and it was like a new truck. Give it another 1k miles and reasses.

The truck does not get better in my experience it’s actually the opposite with more miles. I been looking to trade mine out actually for something different

I seriously think this idea that there is “learning” in the transmission is a made up excuse by Toyota for producing such a piss poor stock tune. I can imagine a conference room full of engineers trying to formulate an excuse for it after the first hundred or so complaints in late 2015-early 2016.

I agree. There shouldn't be a need to have to keep updating or spend close to 1k on an aftermarket tune to get the truck to "run better". Toyota needs to get thier shit together and fix the issues once and for all. Make a truck that runs like one, not like a car or worry about how gas efficient it is. In my opinion, I didnt buy it solely on how fuel economical it is and to have to deal with shifting issues.

Other than crappy transmission and lack of low end torque... I have a howling rear diff, squeaking leaf springs, clattering motor, chirping idle, clunk when coming to a stop, drum brakes that keep getting glazed over squeaking when coming to a stop, fluid in the rear license plate lights, roof leaked, and a kazoo coming from the driver door at high speeds. Been at the dealer a dozen times in 18 months.

I thought the anemic nature of this powertrain was fine too like many here, but after test driving a new JL with 33”s stock and a 2.0L turbo and the 3.6L (drove both) the taco is sluggish even with all the updates. Toyota dropped the ball on this engine for sure.
