Yes they used to sell electrodes for doing just that.

That was what most welds looked like

With Aluminum Mig and Tig becoming in the reach of everyone I think they are no longer around .

Last I recall seeing any was back in the early eighties One of those things they came in a blister pack of 5 or 10

I have no clue if they could be had in a 50 pound can

Jody at weldingtipsandtricks.com made a positioner out of an old bicycle that looked pretty cool. You would probably end up smoking your lathe motor if you put a rheostat on it.

Needed to build a bracket to raise the boat anchor winch. Was really in a bind for time.

Quick, weld with the spool gun to weld the angle aluminum to the tubing.

Hint:your welds will look pretty bad after throwing down a double espresso and coffee.yYN287S1Sew5wUqXO1x0qc1VdOyQjVAEHnlGe6m5_1558c71b87702d6a76fa392cde01c2a249dd1c8f.jpg szDs3QZ6Vw5RSBTUDY_xdOE5uiJ1TPvU7-4xnHa6_d0ed4972823a792625052d9ff02bf50561d39ac1.jpg

Basically just need to know if there’s any books they recommend I read or something to get me started. That teaches me the stuff I need to know. Not looking for a cheat sheet but just some direction would be cool.

@koditten i know youve built up a few HF trailers, do you think 16gauge diamond plate would be strong enough for a surface? i just use the trailer for hauling motorcycles so it needs to bolt down the wheel chock.

id like to keep weight down as much as i can. currently it has 3/4in plywood but thats weathering a bit more than id like

I think 16g tread plate might sag between the cross members a bit. If you added a few cross members I think it would be just fine.

It would definitely be strong enough. If the sag doesn't bother you, don't wast time with the cross members.

Bought myself a MIG machine. Been taking classes at the local community college. Going to be chopping my cab mount and welding on the truck for the first time this weekend. I plan on disconnecting the battery ground. When welding I plan to ground on the cab mount plate/cab mount and move around to not heat up the cab mount too much. Any other tips/suggestions?

How do I find the angle at which the coping/notching should be on those side tubes if I'm placing a tube across parallel to the light bar?

Just understand that welding on old rusty vehicles out of position is most likely the hardest welding one ever does .

Keep the gun as straight as possible it might mean moving the welder a few times

When the puddle gets to hot let it cool down

Be comfortable and be able to see !!

Having someone on fire watch is not a bad idea . Having the means to put out a oil or grease fire is also good.

Find out this angle that I pointed to in your picture and subtract the number from 90 and that’s what the number you should set it at when you throw the tubing in the notcher at.. If that angle is 80 degrees do 90-80=10 and put your tubing in the tube notcher at 10 degrees on a nice flat plane of course and that should cope on correctly.

Thanks, Yeah that's what I figured out. Its 70°. So 20° would be the angle. OR 70° however the notch is done. I dont have a notcher though, grinder status here.

They have paper sleeves you can print out online and then you wrap it around the tubing and trace the notch that you’ll need to cut out

 Exactly what I've been doing. Pretty accurate. Time consuming but still cheaper.
