You're right buddy, I can see both sides of the coin here. On one side it sucks because diesels aren't what they used to be, but yeah with all this
After treatment stuff we have to go out and fix a bunch of machines that would otherwise run forever lol. I don't necessarily agree that diesel engines create all that pollution in China, they have lots of coal power plants that cause a majority of that. But I see where you're coming from, because of out strict pollution laws, we are better off

Also just to be clear, the majority of the engines fucking up are from improper maintenance like using poor quality def or not letting the DPF clean itself with a regen. There are quite a few still that come from the factory already fucked up though. The computers that and components of these new after treatment systems are very sensitive.

Good to know. Never owned a diesel.

I don't know much about diesel engines tbh, only in that they naturally combust when the diesel is under pressure/temperature - which seems like a more streamline approach for an engine.

I cannot even imagine what the auto does to this engine.

That has its own complications. It’s not all happy land at that compression ratio.

    Too few to list.
Just like the 6cyl, it feels like a gear higher than where it should be and Toyota does not have any TSB for the 4cyl to address the issue.

I started with a 1985 SR5 extended cab 4x4 4cyl 5speed, 91 reg cab 4x4 4cyl 5speed, 96 reg cab 4x4 4cyl 5speed, 02 extended cab 4x4 4cyl auto, 07 reg cab 4x4 4cyl 5speed, 14 extended cab 4x4 4cyl 5speed. Then my wife talked me into buying a 17 SR 4x4 4door with V6 6speed auto. I never could get used to the 3.5 with the 6speed auto. I had every TSB done for the crazy shifting. Took me 9mo to find a SR 4cyl 4x4 5speed with the convenience pkg, and rear jump seats. Made the 4hr trip and made the trade and drew $4,000 boot. Couldn't be happier, my point is some people just prefer the simple, time proven 2.7

My '05 4cyl 5-speed was 2wd. I had it 11 years, if it had been 4wd I'd still have it. There is a little red 4x4 2nd gen in town I look at lustily every time I see it. I live in the mid-west though, not the mountains.

I drive mine to work 15 miles each way. use for yard work and firewood broken motorcycles or atv now and then. I get real life 23 to 25 mpg. cant imagine paying extra for the v6 I think if you use it for a "truck " and don't need to get over 80 in a hurry there's nothin better for the daily task at hand.in 100k mile I will be still chugging along slow but steady.now to get the tires to really last 60k miles.

Exactly, the 2.7 is still popular for its simplicity, reliability, and I would even add a romantic factor to this. Same reasons why UPS used the Ford 300 I6 in their trucks and still has some left in the fleet.

Agreed, never heard so much complaints about nearly 280HP, the 3.5L puts out 50% more hp than the 3.4L, but only 20% more torque

It used to be more streamlined until after treatment came along. Gas engines use spark plugs to ignite and diesels use heat of compression to ignite. Problem is that after treatment uses horsepower just like spark plugs use a bit of horsepower. And don't even get me started on the cost of these things... anyway the whole point of me bringing this up is that in commuter vehicals that you aren't using for towing ALL the time, diesels are not worth it. Construction equipment, tractors and trucks that tow a lot of weight are still benefitting from diesel. But gas engines have become so much more efficient and powerful that it's not worth the money for a diesel in a regular car or truck.

I considered the 4 banger 4x4 because it was cheap. I drove it at 4,500' and it was horrible. Could barely get on the freeway. Got an SR double cab 4x4. I live at 6,000'. Tinted windows, Falkens and 17" pro wheels. Looks better than a stock OR or Pro and much cheaper. No reason to buy an ext cab. Why? You're already spending a lot of cash so why no just go double cab.

Some people find 4 seats and 4 doors on a truck to be absurd. Or a short bed to be useless. Or a 4 door long bed to be miserable on the trails. It’s not always about the money, and more doors don’t always make something more desireable.

If you're already spending a lot of cash, why not get the OR at that point? Double cab is too long to park if you live in a city, not the suburbs, but in a city it is. Depends on expectations. It's a truck to me, not a sports car. Truck be truckin' and don't care 'bout layin' rubber.

Simple. I don't like the OR wheels or tires. I was going to immediately change wheels and go with larger tires even if I got the OR. I don't rock crawl so the locker wasn't needed. I saved about $6k over the modded OR I would have had. If I want to add an ARB, I will still be ahead enough to get sliders, bumbers, leather seats, and then I'd reach the cost of a stock OR. As for short bed, it fits in my garage. We get 4-6' snow storms with 0 degree nights sometimes so having it inside and warm makes mornings and snowblowing easier.
