What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Does anyone here have a mid-travel setup up front with dakars in the rear? If so any recommendations for rear shocks?

I was thinking of doing a shock relocate down the road, will probably follow @Speedytech7 's setup, but I just want to get as much flex out of the rear as I can for now.

 

Yeah, POR15 is one of the speciality chassis paints. I know VHT makes a chassis paint too.

I re-painted my Steering Knuckles with POR15. It's holding up great.

 

Oh that looks great. Looks like it was made for it. It’s not level because I didn’t bolt it down yet.

Have to wire the backlight, mount it, and it should be good to go.

 

Oil/grease coatings are the way to go in terms of super long term rust prevention. Por15 is just another form of paint, one of the good ones but its still paint.

 

Oh, I had no idea POR15 was actually paint. I never looked into it cause I don't need it & heard it was expensive. I assumed POR15 was just a type of protective sealant that eventually wears off rather than paint.

 

Pretty cool but will it be level there even if bolted down? I don't recall that part of the dash being level.

You sir are brave, I could never drill into my dash to mount something like that or even smaller.

 

Yessir. There’s three adjustment knobs on it.

Eh. I can always just change out the dash if I decided to remove it.

 

450k and it still blows ice cold air.

I actually had to borrow the A/C button from my PreRunner because this truck didn’t come with one.

 

Oh nice. Can the internals be flipped upside down? Would be cool if they could & mount it on the headliner. Ah well come to think of it, that may be too high up for easy viewing.

 

Totally could if you wanted to. No good place to put it though.

 

I pretty much knew it was Toyota OE when it read "made in Japan" on the Drivetrain America site. I didnt think Spicer made Toyota shafts until the 2nd gen came out though. But, I posted my finding in the carrier bearing thread. Hopefully others will save some money in the future. Goes to show how much Toyota marks up their stuff. $70 thru Spicer versus $200 thru Toyota for the same thing. Thats a heck of a profit, and unfortunetly most people willingly pay it. Makes me curious as to who makes some other things that tend to go bad on these trucks.

 

Yeah. It's just that thing is too bulky for my tastes to be mounted on top of the dash.

 

It’s not that bad. You should’ve seen how bulky the Mitsubishi Montero unit I was about to use.

The Toyota one is 100x smaller.

 

Not bad of a price but I doubt that's the same supplier for Toyota. Mine looks slightly different. Depends on where & how you shop, I rarely walk into a local dealer to buy parts u less my buddy is working who will give me shop prices. I got my OEM one for like $123 shipped. But whatever, if that one lasts longer than all the other aftermarket ones it's a good deal.

 

Could be just the pics but hat would drive me bananas. Still pretty cool though, only twice in the 14ys I've owned my truck that I would ever had found that useful and the second time was just a few days ago.

What's that from, a Hilux right? I don't recall seeing something like that on a US market Toyota.

The thing is though, it doesnt have the spicer part number any where on it. But it does have a Toyota PN. I compared it to the one shown in the carrier bearing thread and their identical. Made in Japan and everything. If it was actually a spicer/Dana part it would be US made I believe.

 

The barometer is in Meters so this came off of a Hilux Surf. They did come on certain 2nd Gen 4Runners though.

 

Wonder what that p/n is, doesn't come up as a valid Toyota number for me. Mine has a different number on it. The original one that came off my truck & the new one I put on looks identical. Your's looks slightly different. But regardless, like I said, if it lasts longer than all the other aftermarket ones then it's a good buy.

 

It came up as a 1st gen tundra part number. Ive read that these trucks shared the same CB. Drivetrain America had the Tacoma part number cross referenced so it should fit just fine.

 

Yup, T100 is the same also. The rubber does look good on yours. IIRC it's the soft rubber that doesn't last very long on the cheap aftermarket ones.
