    The best part is that you don’t have to if you don’t want to. My goal is to retire debt free and be able to live off just the pension if I want to.

    I found the DoL portion of TGPS to be one of the most condescending experiences I’ve had in the military, and that’s saying something.

    @FriedRiceDude
    I am currently Active Duty Army, I have been in for 7 Years.

    1. Most insurance companies have a "storage" coverage, its pretty cheap and should cover your vehicle against natural disasters/ minimum mileage by family/ etc... I would recommend storing your vehicle with a family memeber. If that is not an option then there are storage facilities that offer vehicle options. Upon completion of Initial Entry Training (Basic + Advanced Individual Training) you will have an opportunity to take leave and move whatever belongings you have and your vehicle to your new duty station. Unless you are stationed overseas.

    2. There are a lot of jobs in the Army, you should consider not only what you are interested in but what your personality type is. For instance you may be a meat head athlete who has a closet love for computers but you will generally not be surrounded by people with similar off duty interests. I would advocate for a technical job and then pursue those that also offer Airborne school written in your contract. The technical job will give you some type of background to fall back on if you decide the Army is not for you at the end of your enlistment. After earning your initial MOS then pursue the Special Forces (Green Berets) or volunteer for RASP( Rangers) in Airborne school. Choosing the 18X (Special Forces Candidate) out of the gates is not the greatest option due to the high initial washout rate in Assessment and Selection and if you fail you go to needs of the Army. I am currently in this pipeline so I can speak to the pros and cons of it.

    DM me if you have more questions.

    For what it’s worth I was E4p with the 101st and moved off base because the barracks were full. The E6 thing is not set in stone at all.

    2nd this. I did 88M for awhile. I loved it, but I was surrounded by people that did not share same interests as me outside of work. I took it because of the bonuses at the time when I enlisted a little while back. I’m retired now.

    Get a job you’ll enjoy with side activities. There is always side stuff you can do depending on the base as well. I did the Bataan Death March, German Armed Profeciency Badge, and etc.

    Also, I highly recommend going Officer. If you go that route, listen to yor NCOs. They know what they are talking about. Nothing we hated more than an officer straight out of school that “knew everything”.

    Just tell the recruiter that you want to join the Coast Guard but you’re not smart enough.

    Already been said it happens. I’d never heard of it at multiple bases, or through my network of friends bitching about it.

    I’ll still say - you’re the exception to the ludicrous rule. He’s set on the army anyhow, so it isn’t important.

    Great decision to join up and serve the country. The benefits are boundless and you will develop lifelong friendships. Personally, I don't care what service you enter, same respect either way.

    I enlisted in March of 2000 for 4 active then 4 national guard at age 33 and was prior law enforcement. The drill sergeants called me “old man” during boot and AIT but I got respect as my MOS was 11B, then jump school, then 18X. While going through hell at Ft. Benning, 2001 happened. Never got the chance to finish training as we got deployed in Afghanistan, then iraq, then back to Afghanistan before my discharge. They offered 50 grand to re sign another 4 active but with 2 bullet wounds, broken collar bone, and multiple contusions during combat....Those and my age, would not let me finish 18X. So I got discharged and did my 4 with the national guard. Best time of my life. I got stories that would make most cringe!!

    Well I got drafted in 1969 and the Army assigned me a MOS which was 76W20. Heard lots of stories about enlisting with promises of a certain MOS but they were never kept. I realize times have changed a lot, but don't think I would go Army if enlisting. You may regret your decision after a few weeks of basic training.

    My advice is to avoid the Army if possible. I did nine years, and the majority of folks I met didn't want to be there. They seem to have a lot more problem soldiers and chapters than any other branch. This may just be due to lower standards for entry, or the fact they're much larger than other branches.
