Softopper on extended cab

Looking to switch up my setup. I have an extra tall camper shell on my truck and I'm trying to find a lighter setup that will keep my bed dry. Anyone running the Softopper on their extended cab? Got photos? How water tight are they?

 

Ive had a Softopper for about 4 years now. It is about as dry as my old Leer fiberglass topper was, meaning in a heavy rain while driving, there would be a very small drip in the front corners, not enough to be an issue. It’s very well made and I have no regrets. If you are looking to sleep in it or haul a dog, I would think twice as it gets very hot with zero air movement. You can get a screened rear door, but you lose waterproof-ness. I really like the ability to roll up the sides to access firewood while camping.

 

There is also the Can-Back. It does not fold like the Softopper, but it allows you to have an integrated roof rack on top, or side racks for carrying things on the side. They have zip-out side and rear panels, so you can get screen mesh windows with inner panels for privacy or rain.

And, it will keep you dry.

Nice. Can-Backs have come a long way since I had one. That was over 13 years ago.

I had it on for a few years. Eventually, the sides became brittle and had shrunk, leaving me no option but to leave them rolled up. Eventually, I cut the side and rear panels off, making it more like a bikini top. The metal frame that bolts to the bed rails also rusted out.

Even though all of that happened, I have been thinking of getting a new one.

This looks great! Is this the grey color? I think I’ll be going with grey to break up all the white and black on my truck. I’m not sure I can pull off tan.

 

This looks cool, but my motivation is to reduce weight and drag. My truck is a dog. If I had the power it would be awesome to run this with my rtt

Yeah, the black fades pretty quickly. I own the grey model. This is my second gray unit, looks great on my silver truck. Imo a white truck and tan softopper is the best combination.

 

I can't find any pics of tan on white extended cab. It's tempting but I need to know I can pull it off. Gonna order one tomorrow morning

Can't go wrong with gray. It won't fade it's color like the black ones eventually do.

But congrats on getting a softopper. They're very nice.

 

The Can-Back now has a stainless steel frame, including the side rails. The side panels are now Sunbrella Plus, which ages extremely well. But if something does happen, they can be unzipped and replaced.

This top is 4 years old. It is used for photo shoots were it is parked right next to a brand new top. The main image on the www.Can-Back.com website is this truck next to a brand new Ford.

 

The base CanBack, without the roof racks, weighs 65 lbs.

Ordered a grey softopper today. Should be here on Wednesday!

 

Loving how lightweight this thing is. My shell really made my truck feel sluggish. Visibility is.. ok.

I don't like how the windows are sized. They are too low which sacrifices visibility. Also.. there is a large gap against the cab of the truck. Wasn't expecting that at all. It's raining outside right now so I'll be able to report back soon about how well it keeps water out.

 

Any of you guys install your Softopper on a 1st gen with the Toyota bed liner. ?
I know this is an old thread.
Or any camper with the bed liner.

 

Are you talking about the plastic liner? My bed is Line-X'd and I also have a Softopper.
