Decision time...

Well, here's my odometer as I arrived at work this morning:



This gives me 12 miles to decide whether or not to get the Toyota Platinum Extended Warranty. I am 99% sure I'm not going to get it for the following reasons:

1. My truck is lifted so most suspension parts would be not covered
2. Had the rear TSB done at 30K miles and my dealer replaced all of my shocks at that time even though I had a TRD and the TSB didn't call for tha
3. I plow with my truck so just about anything suspension/transmission related would not be covered
4. I have had zero problems with my truck

So, my feeling is that I will most-likely not incur $889.00 in repairs in the next four years which is the cost of the 7yr/100K plan I was considering.

Any thoughts??? Thanks in advance!

 

I'd also factor in whether or not you're able to fix any potential problems on your own or if you'd need to take it in to have most of the work done.

 

Good point...fortunately for me...my old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it.





Seriously, aside from the TSB, I've done everything to my truck and feel confident that I can fix most anything that comes up. I know that I can get some great tech support here so I think I'm good-to-go...

 

Agree with not extending the warranty, especially with the limited coverage. Not much chance of our Tacomas having many costly issues up to 100K miles. Save that $900 for mods/tires.

 

x2. What are the chances the warranty is going to pay for itself? My guess is pretty slim given the exclusions, your use of the truck, and reliability of the truck.

I plow with mine, now at 68k, and zero issues.

I don't see how plowing will kill your warranty. Just take the plow off before hitting the dealer.

While yes, I agree the chances you won't need it are pretty slim, but also think about how much things cost on this truck. For the additional components going out on your truck, the compass temp sensor for one, is almost $1000 in itself.

As for powertrain.... you have 5/60k on that. So, you're only going out on accessory type crap (gauges, electronics, window motors, ect). Your engine/trans/diff(s)/transfer case.... whatever is applicable for your truck is still covered.

Remember, Manguson Moss Act means they must PROVE your mod absolutely caused the failure, not the other way around.

 

I look at things like, how much does an alternator/power steering pump/etc. cost to replace. If those are covered, and you're going to keep the truck for a long while, I'd weigh the cost of the ext. warranty against the probable cost of repairs between now and whenever the warranty is up.
