I shift between 3 and 4 k, it sounds rad (like a dialed inline 4) and is in its sweet spot.

I have had Subarus for my wife for many years specifically for the AWD, safety, and reliability. While the reliability has suffered a bit (many recalls), I am so annoyed by those crunchy pseudo hippie commercials I may never buy one again. I think their marketing is a mistake. They are targeting those who buy a USED Subaru more than a new one. Rich hippies use their trust fund to buy a new Prius ever year to shop at Whole Foods. Poor hippies (the majority) buy used Subarus and Volvo wagons. Anecdotal, but most people I know and see in a Subaru are normal.

My 2015 had the 2.7-5spd, great setup but slow. Truck got totaled, went with the 3.5-6spd on the new truck. New truck feels like a race car compared to the old. It took awhile to get used to the extra gear after 20 plus years with a 2.7-5spd setup. Get the V6.

I was talking with these two leggy brunettes the other day. I wouldn't have thought they were lesbians, until they got into an Outback and drove away.

Subaru North America has goofy marketing.

They're selling a lifestyle, just like every other vehicle or most products, the difference is that they are doing it EXTREMELY well. Look at their sales figures:
    http://www.goodcarbadcar.net/2012/10/subaru-brand-sales-figures-usa-canada/
Someone has to buy new ones, and they are. My buddy just bought one, and similar to buying a KTM, the dealer politely reminded him that there was no room for negotiations, as he would have no problem selling it to the next person through the door.

My 2017 Tacoma had the four-cylinder automatic with the 430 gears in a 4 x 4. It ran OK it was sluggish around town and a hill would really put a hurting on it. I bought it because of the legendary reliability and I know that motor will run forever except I could never live with it forever. I was sick of it quick . it was great for the 80s and 90s but by todays standards it’s just so outdated and it feels that way.

I think most would agree if you get the 4 cylinder, get the manual transmission. Of course now the MT is no longer offered with the i4.

That doesn't make sense to me, I had a 22re in an old 4runner, redline was 5,700 but peak power was <5k RPMs, after 5k its just spinning and valve float came on pretty quickly, over 6k its literally just useless abuse I don't see how a factory 22r could go over 7k without detonating.

Were you running forged internals with a lower compression turbo application or something?? Only time I've seen a 22r be usefull over 6k RPM was in a crazy celica race car I used to see at SCCA events but he had fully forged internals and some crazy valves I had never even heard of but he could go to 9k IIRC.

Correction, the V6 has power but you need higher RPMs to unleash it. Same thing applies to the 2.7 also.

Big rig diesels aren't winning races up any mountains either.
