Went to Freeman Toyota in Hurst, TX yesterday (great dealership) and looked at Tacomas, but then started looking at 4runners. Got on the computer today to read comparisons and came across this. When I read the OP I thought, "This guy is nuts, of course EVERYONE is going pick the Tacoma!" My jaw is now dropped that well over half of those that responsed picked the 4runner. This is probably the first time I've seen something like this happen on a car forum.

Really depends what the end goal is. I need something with a truck bed, albeit small 5ft, but didn't want to have an SUV/ utility trailer combo. Taco was the best fit for me. After owning a truck, won't ever go without one. Life is much easier when you can haul what you want, when you want. I would love a T4R but it would be in ADDITION to having a truck.

This post made me second-guess my thoughts on what I want. My dad gave me his '01 GMC 1500 w/250K miles and I've been DD it for over a year and maybe "needed" the bed twice??? But how do I break the formula: Texas + Male = Truck?

    Or a bicycle. Elephant trunk...

Ive now got the same problem though. I never use my bed. When I would need a bed I end up using my open trailer most of the time because it's easier to load, and fits much more stuff.

The corollary is Male / size of truck = size of penis.

I've got the 17 TRD Sport Tacoma DCSB, and just bought my Fiance the 18 T4R Pro. Both have their ups, both have their downs.

Tacoma Pro: Dash/Cluster more updated, more options. Bigger Screen, Bed for when I need to haul things, better fuel economy (24 Tacoma, 18 T4R) Feels a little snappier on the throttle when I need it, kids fit well in back seat.
    Tacoma Cons: Transmission (Auto specifically)

T4R Pro: Comfortable as all hell, rides amazingly (comparing sport to Pro though, so remember that part) . Fits adults in rear seat much better. Room in the Back is good for Groceries and not worrying about getting them wet if i have the family with me.
T4R Cons: Feels a little lacking on the acceleration, Dash Info Center is very outdated looking with very little information compared to my Sport Tacoma, Fuel Mileage (Fiance and I just took a 180 mile trip, she followed directly behind me the whole way. I averaged 24-25mpg, she was getting 17-18) . Turning Radius is horrendous compared to the Tacoma.

They both have their pros, both have their cons. Really comes down to what you'll be doing with it. I like my bed for carrying wood, and work materials (travel welder), but I like taking hers when we're going grocery shopping and it's raining so they're not in the bed of the truck when we have the kids, and also prefer hers if we take trips to camp as her softer suspension makes it a little easier on your bottom.

Just sold my tacoma and back into a new 2018 silver trd off-road 4runner. I love both, but sadly the new development I’m living in doesn’t allow pickups. The only reason to get the Tacoma is if you need the bed or prefer a manual transmission. If you can get by with the 4runner and cargo carrier that fits into the hitch or small trailer I say do that instead. I fish all the time and the 4runner with a cargo carrier is a fantastic combo. 4runner is by far more comfortable and built with materials that feel much more quality to me. The 4.0 engine/transmission in the 4R is bullet proof and fantastic and may be gone in a year or two. It’s smooth as silk. Not saying the Tacoma engine is bad at all, but the torque just feels like it’s more usable down low in the 4R. On the flip side, the 4R gas mileage is not as good. Im a manual transmission guy and do miss the manual transmission in my tacoma though. In my opinion you can’t really go wrong with either. Test drive both back to back and decide if you really need the bed or not. Also, the power rear window in 4R is awesome if you have a dog. Both are awesome trucks. T4r.org is a great site for 4runner guys also.

Some friends of mine bought a Grand Cherokee yesterday. I tried talking them into a 4Runner, their money, their time spent at the service department.

What kind of development does not allow pick ups?

Sorry to take the thread so far off the subject, but you said you live in a "new development that dose not allow pickup trucks". Do you mind if I ask where it is located?

One in Florida where rich old white people make the rules and can’t comprehend that just because you drive a pickup doesn’t make you a criminal. Honestly, I only agreed to move in here because my fiancé absolutely fell in love with the place. Friggin women
