Is this a good deal on a 2001 Taco?

Alright, I don't have a taco yet but am looking for one for just a third vehicle for yard work and such. I found a 2001 Reg Cab 4WD SR5 5 speed with 120k miles. The dealership was asking 10,800 and I laughed...I offered 7,800 and they excepted the offer. This was all done over the phone today. The only problem is, I told them I want to pay 7800 OTD, they have 300 bucks in "fees" that has to be added to the price which kind of pisses me off; my wife says just buy it and get over the fees. What do you guys think? KBB retail is 7550 and I know these trucks are going for more than retail. It's in great condition with a clean carfax and impeccable service records. I told the salesman that I really wanted to pay 7800 OTD but he wouldn't agree to it. The next time I can get to the dealership is friday. I am leaning towards sucking it up and paying the 300 dollar fees because I think 7800 is a good price. Anyway, let me know what you guys think. Great forum!

 

It really gets down to how well its equipped. If it is a bare base model with nothing added, $8100 otd is too much for that high a mileage imho. Based on the info you provided, i'd say $7500 otd max.

I usually go to edmonds.com rather than kbb. You know what accessories are on it, like a/c, put them into the appraisal calculator to see for yourself.

 

It must be loaded with every option to fetch that price. I think it is too much myself. You should be able to pick up stock used one for no more than 4500 or so if you dont have to finance. If its a fact of not having the cash.....I guess it depends how badly you want it.

It's SR5 so it has the nice alloy wheels, bucket seats, full instrument cluster, CD/Tape, A/C, michellin tires, 5 speed manual, and 4wd if I didn't mention that. Yeah, retail is 7500 with all those options. I literally laughed when he told me 10,800...they're nuts! All the toyota dealers have their trucks priced way to high. I guess it's because some people will pay that. I live in NH so 4wd is worth a bit more than in other states. The lowest price for a taco I've seen is on a 95 extra cab LX 4wd with 130k miles; asking price is 5500 but I want the dual air bags and I don't want to deal with the rust on that year taco. So given the options and the KBB retail, is this still a bad deal?

Pay the fee and get the truck if you really want it. All dealers have a b.s. document fee which enables them to have their minions run to the dmv and get plates, the rest is their 'paperwork' fee which I don't get because isn't that part of their job? The 300 is 3.8% of the purchase price - not alot.

 

To be honest that truck doesnt really do it for me. You can see the pretty good scratches on it, and its a standard, and a regular cab. I think you might wana offer them 6.5gs if you really want it. Its 9 years old, i think you can do better.

 

I just did an edmunds TMV pricing and it came out to 8k and some change. Damn, these trucks hold thier value! So, I guess I shouldn't care about the fee (but it is bogus!) since it isn't that much...it's a pride thing. Thanks for the suggestions and comments...I'll let you know if I get the truck and will post pics.

Let me guess, you have the old split benchseat they put in the 95-2000 tacos. I had a 98 SR5 extra cab 4wd with that seat (loved that truck!) which was not very comfortable. Not that the "new" bucket seats are much better. I think the sport bucket seats in the 2nd gen are comfortable as well as the 1st gen limited bucket seats.

Looks like a good deal to me. Hard to find one that has not been all butchered.
The $300 dealer fee would piss me off too. Some of the dealers want $699 and I told them to stuff it.

 

Alright, I bought it for 7800...just brought it home tonight! The maintenance was all done per manufacturers recommendation and all done by the dealership (I bought it from) for the past nine years. Also, a year ago the dealership replaced the muffler, battery, and brake pads/rotors. The frame was inspected a year ago and had the rust proofing coating sprayed on it; it is showing some rust again though, however, toyota has extended the frame rust warranty 15 years past the original service date...so the frame on my truck is under warranty until 8/2016! I can go in as many times as I want to have the frame inspected...that's not a bad deal by toyota. I am actually going to wait a while to bring it back in because I am hoping the frame will have enough rust to replace the frame. Engine runs real strong and the interior is in great condition; someone took good care of this truck. I had a 98 tacoma with the 2.7 auto; this truck has the 5 speed which completely transforms this engine...very nice power for a four cylinder. I ended up financing it for 60 months but planning on paying it off in a couple of years. I can't believe I just spend 7800 bucks on a 9 year old vehicle! Engine runs perfect though! Great truck for yard work, dump runs, and just using the bed for stuff. Now I have the best of both worlds, a 2009 Civic Si for my DD and the truck for recreational stuff...not too bad!

 

I had a similar experience with Carmax, I arranged the deal in my home town asked the salesperson about the doc fee and was told its in the total asking price, when I drove 200 miles to pick up the truck guess what had to pay $160 doc fee, I was pissed and paided it, didn't want to go back home without the vehicle.

Hard to find a nice first gen 4x4 like you found. I screwed around and thought the price was too high and missed a nice one so I am still looking.
