Former USMC 0311 here, if I had to do it over again I would enlist in the Navy and go in as a hospital corpsman and go FMF and be attached with a infantry unit

No joke, if I was enlisting all over again I would seriously consider the Coast Guard. I was thinking about it one day - they're really the only branch that does their job every day. All the other branches, especially the Army and the Marines, train, train, and train some more for a scenario that we hope never happens.

Just messing with you. My grandpa was a 2nd Division machine gunner in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He talked me out of the Corps when I enlisted. His exact quote: "Kenny, they promised they'd make me a pilot, then they handed me a machine gun and said 'good luck'." haha

I know that’s the fun with inter service rivalry. Except the Marine Corps hates everyone including non infantry marines lol.

Truth. I was 17 when I enlisted Army and spent nearly a year in the Delayed Entry Program. My ASVAB score was high enough that I could've gotten whatever MOS I wanted, but I was young and dumb and let them talk me into a BS job - 72E - that was already obsolete before I even finished my AIT. 72E is a signal MOS, and in the mid-80s the technology was blowing up and changing so fast the Army couldn't keep up. That's the one thing I really consider a mistake. My first and only permanent duty station was Ft Campbell with the 101st, so that I do not regret. I was HHC for the entire AVN BDE, so even my dumb signal ass got to fly everywhere. haha

The only thing that I can say the Army has over the Air Force is helicopters. I would love to be a warrant officer flying a little bird.

Other than that, enjoy getting fucked by some of the most ignorant individuals you have ever met. If you want IT and cyber look at the AF and any of the cyber security jobs which can open upto cyber warfare. You’re not committed to anything until you sign the contract and report to MEPS.

    Too much.
    THIS!!!!!! HOly crap this.

There is a lot of good advice here so far. Especially knowing what you want to do after you are done with your service. A guy I served with years ago just retired from the CG, has CISSP certs and landed a big money gig at Raytheon as a cyber guy.

On the other side of things, I know you might think schooling is boring right now, but given the choice between finishing school and enlisting, I'd finish school. Or, you can go reserves, still finish school, then get an active contract.....

    ^Second this.

6 years in the IT field. When I first joined I told them I wanted to do artillery (Yea I'm a fucking retard). I tested high on the ASVAB and they offered me an IT job. Told the dude at meps I would rather eat a wheat bagel than be in a IT job but wanting to serve got the best of me and i took the job reluctantly. He looked at me and said "You'll never meet me again but trust me you'll thank me later" and also put me in for airborne. If I could go back and kiss that man on his bald head, I would.... 100% homo.

I've spent my whole career in SOF so I don't know what BIG Army is like. I'm thinking about getting out since they set me up for a future that I know I can crush and make big $$$ on the outside. Pick USAA for insurance/ storage, they make everything easy.

You could be a Navy Nuke...... lol. $100,000 reenlistment bonuses. I think it was a $13,000 signing bonus and then I got the 100k. You'll at least get a secret clearance, some get TS depending on your boat.

Not sure you'd enjoy it though. I enjoyed my time in (~1 month left). YMMV

Now I'm going to work for the shipyards doing the same thing I do now but with way better hours and better pay.

I should add it only took me 2 weeks to get a job. Everyone in the civilian sector hires nukes like crazy.

Sell the truck before you go in. You dont want the added stress of financial obligations. Your going to be making about $47.00 a week
