Bump! Just want to re-up this! Please donate to a great cause!

Having secured @ChadsPride permission, I am appealing to all of my Texas Toyota Coalition brothers and sisters for assistance in an endeavor that I believe will resonate with each of you personally or someone you know. On the 30th of September, I am participating in The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in Houston to raise awareness of prostate cancer and men’s mental health for the Movember Foundation.*

    Why prostate cancer?

Simply stated, the discussion and seriousness of prostate cancer is maligned by a certain amount of amusement (think of petroleum jelly and gloved finger jokes), but yet is the second deadliest cancer for men. Aside from raising awareness for this worthy yet under-reported cause, I have a personal connection to this issue as well. My grandfather, who I never had the chance to meet, died of prostate and spinal cancer. My hope is that perhaps one day soon, children will not know the sadness and emptiness from losing or never having known their grandfather due to cancer.

    By the numbers...

Aside from skin cancer, prostate cancer is the #1 cancer in men and has the 2nd highest mortality rate.

    Broken down...

    • 15.3 million (1:9): estimated number of men in the United States who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime
    • 164,690: estimated new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2018
    • 29,430: estimated deaths from prostate cancer in 2018
    • 26,730: deaths from prostate cancer in 2017

To put these figures in perspective...

    • The number of men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime is approximately equal to the metro area populations of Houston, Dallas-Ft. Worth, and Austin combined. On a national level comparison, the number of men who will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their life is slightly greater than the July 2018 city populations of New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago.
    • The combined population of League City and Galveston is less than the number of the estimated new prostate cancer diagnoses in 2018.
    • The estimated number of deaths from prostate cancer is greater than the populations of 94.1% of Texas cities/CDPs (census designated populations).

Donations can be made on my Distinguished Gentleman's Ride profile.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR TIME AND CONSIDERATION!

    * According to Charity Navigator, the Movember Foundation has an overall rating of 87.28%, with a 100% score for accountability and transparency. For comparison, two well-known charity organizations, Goodwill Industries of Houston and Susan G. Komen for the Cure, have a respective ranking of 89.86% and 80.87%.

Let's get some action going in this thread.

My vote, for whatever it's worth, is we have some sort of Halloween costume contest for the October COTA meet. Proposed guidelines:

    • It has to be somewhat workplace safe for the kids (no wearing ass-less chaps but please wear the appropriate shade of red lipstick/nail polish @KENNY).
    • Don't be offensive. Don't show up as a penis wearing a condom. Play it PC, which should mean respectful.
    • Do be imaginative. Poke gentle fun at something that happened at a TTC-sponsored event or go as another member (e.g. dress as a biscuit to commemorate your favorite TTC pseudo-journalist)
    • Don't shy away from working with other TTC members to have a themed costume group.
    • Add to the fun (mayhem) by including your best friend: spouse, pet, and/or Tacoma.
    • Dressing up your Tacoma in a costume is an acceptable substitute for a costume for yourself.
    • Have fun!
