I’m running 5.29 gears and the only thing I don’t like is that the piñon shaft is so small!! I’ve snapped the piñon before when one of my 40”s got sucked under a log and started binding. Probably would have broke the shaft or hub if they where stock. I have since gone from arb hub studs back to stock to provide my axle a cheaper weak link that’s an easy trail fix.

Apples to oranges as the 8.75 rear locker is yuge compared to what you're running. The gear contact patch is almost 2 times the surface area and the 5.29 pinion gear in the 8.75 is larger than a stock 4.10 in in an 8". I'm going to have a custom housing built around one of these for my 4runner, though due to power band differences and transmission ratios only run 4.88s.

Now the non off road trucks, sorry about your 8" luck. Your rear differential is smaller in ring and pinion size than your front.

The recent factory elocker thread had a comment about how much smoother ATRAC seems in the manual, with 4.30s, vs the auto. Have you tried your CC and MTS with the new gears @JoeCOVA ?

Damm... I was hoping after switching to 5.29's my top speed would be limited to less than 4-5 mph, but I guess not. With stock gears (3.90) I was able to do close to 10 mph in 1st gear in 4Lo and that sucked big time when coming down the steep hill during off roading. I guess I will be still riding those brakes.

I am not sure how changing gear would make any difference in this case because Toyota's CC uses brakes not the diff.

I am not sure what he mean exactly by "tractable". If he is referring to engaging and disengaging, I am sure MT has an advantage. At first when I bought the truck I was having tough time locking the rear diff and getting in to 4Lo, but after playing around I found out that I was moving the truck too much. But when it comes to CC or MTS I am not sure what he means by "tractable".

I was just assuming "less throttle manipulation" which makes sense, due to torque multiplication. Look at marlin crawler's tacobox vid...

With what size tires? I am guessing if I run 33-34 I would get to slower at that rpm.

That's stock tires. Bigger tires will raise your effective great ratio, so you should go sightly faster.

Crap. Sorry I should have quoted @JoeCOVA since I believe he has largertires. I am assuming that with 5.29 gears and smaller than 35” tires I should be able to slower for the given rpm.

I havent tried CC or MTS with the new gears but I have only a limited sample from the stock gears. CC was terrible the two times I used it and just bucked all over, and MTS is a new feature that I havent explored much. I'm a little old school in that I just use my locker when needed but MTS is something I will definitely try more.

We have some offroad trips coming up in the next couple weeks that I can test out.

I just filled the tank for the first time running the new gears on stock tires and mpg was 18.6. Not alarming however 200 miles were on I-25 at about 70mph, the rest were local driving.

I would occasionally get into the 18s when driving exclusively local or during offroad trips so I am led to believe that there is a slight mpg drop by about 1 mpg. This is likely due to two factors:

    1. The truck drives much better and been having a little more fun with it so this likely contributed to loss of mpg
    2. Truck no longer operates at optimum engine levels for fuel efficiency as well as the general increase in rpms across all gears.

It seems that the bulk of mpg loss is from local driving, engine runs higher and shifts much faster.

That's crazy. Math don't lie, but I really figured you would be revving to the sky with those gears.

I can care less about CC. Like you said, I have tried it couple of times and hated it. I feel I can do a better job than CC with all electronics turned off in 4Lo. I haven't tried MTS and don't know how it can help. I just drop down to 4Lo and lock the diff when needed and just drive kinda person.

Yup. Just got my wheels yesterday but need new valve stems. I hope to have the 35s ready to go by the end of the week.

Great! I'm looking forward to how the rpms and mpgs are affected with the 35s. So far, it looks like 5.29s are the way to go if you have some weight and going to 35s.
