I have a 2017 MGM DCLB Sport and now that I have ordered a 4 Wheel Camper to go on the bed, I wish I had an Off Road. I wish I had the empty space where the ABS sits on the passenger side for a spare battery placement and the overall lighter weight (more payload). My truck is paid for so this one is going to have to wear out before I change.

After years of driving manual transmissions in an ever-more-congested city I finally gave up and got an auto with my Tacoma. I don't regret it, but I'm open to trading for a manual in a year or two if I really find myself missing the experience.

Honestly I really don't think the AT is that bad. And the cheapest fix would be to stop reading TacomaWorld threads like this.

NO. Piss poor layout of the steering colum stalks, IE cruise control. Unsealed battery, which was OE on 1972 US vehicles. Shitty hold downs on underhood fuse cover, no underhood light and a fucking hood prop. Under dash fuse panel that you have to lay on your back to see. Come on, you can't put a fuse block on the side of the dash like other manufacturers do?

Come on, you charge $30K plus for a vehicle and can't design a hood with springs to prop it up? My 73 TR6 used a square prop with a release. Pick the hood all the way up and it is held up by the prop. Picke the hood up again and it releases. Simple. Even that would be an improvement. No vent on the rear differential. No padding on the underneath of the hood to muffle engine noise. Shitty factory 'skid plate' that wouldn't make a good pie pan. My 06 GMC came with a 3/16 thick aluminum skid from the factory. Should I address the rear end howl that my dealer says is the tires?

No dipstick on the trans? Fine, a lot of manufacturers do that. At least take it all the way and do like Allison and others do it. Press a button on the dash and your fluid level is shown in a short while. No need to crawl under your vehicle and swing a dead chicken around your head counterclockwise while you remove the check plug

Last but not least. Zero coverage of the fuse panels in the owners manual. You must be kidding. I found an explanation of the fuse panel online, luckily. 1500 miles so far. I can't wait for 150K

Yes, I did test drive it before I bought it. 2018 TRD off road long bed

Doors are light, bed is composite plastic (don't get any strong solvents on it). The frontier seems more solid. Don't get me wrong... I love my truck, but would have gone a different way if Nissan were more up to date.

I did the same. Years of manual and went auto Tacoma. A year later, traded for a manual. All feels right again.

It's not the only thread with so much negativity. I know about 4 owners too. One loves his. Just not too many reasons to upgrade yet. Hearing from actual users of a vehicle is invaluable

Product I comes out. It is loved.

Product II comes out. It is loved, but many say it is not as good as I.

Your 06 probably has lots of years left in it.

    I wouldn't upgrade either.

But if I joined TW before buying my 3rd gen, I would be driving a Frontier.

Glad I didn't, because most/ all the negative reports I read here don't pertain to my truck- it's a nice solid little truck, best truck I have owned to date

    Cheers

I remember being on TTORA when they came out, the majority of anyone complaining was they did not like the square fender openings and or they thought the truck was too big to fit on the trails.

I didnt read the whole thread but i have to chip in and say absolutely I would buy it again. I dont seem to have the problems i see people crying about on here. Been reading this forum for about a month now and it seems like most people hate that they bought a tacoma.

I ended up with a 2018 with a nasty diff howl. I've driven several 3rd gens, so I know I just got unlucky. Most are ok I think. The sound showed up 3 days off the lot. If I could do it over again, I'd get a 4runner. As of now, I can't even comfortably take a road trip on two lane highways due to the noise. It's ok on interstates as long as I'm 65mph+.

A good amount of them have a 2016 or 17 so they've had some time with it. I love the features and design of the 3rd Gen. I'd probably go with Quicksand or Cement someday

Haha yeah I would understand those reasons coming from 1st geners. Luckily those reasons weren't about quality or malfunction
