I see. Then there's some misinformation on the part of the salvage companies listing the 4Runner cases. Some say they are compatible with several models of 4Runner, like SR5, Limited, and Trail. I'm gonna have to look for listings where they show an actual picture of the part being sold.

Also, since you mention limiteds, my '14 limited 4Runner was full time 4wd, so it had a center diff with a locker. I never took a look at the case tho. An AWD Tacoma would be kinda cool, but you probably have to have to manually wire up switches to get the actuators to function.
I still need to wire up something to get my E locker to work.

I like the front range off-road twin sticks. Much more solid feeling than Dave’s off-road

Kinda. The chain cases have a different base than the geared cases. Just look for one that is for a fj case and you should be fine

Any of you guys having done this and fab'd new shift rods for their fj case out of solid round stock notice the vibrations from the case are sent through the rod and slightly louder in the cab? The stock shifter obviously has the dampener.

All the aftermarket shifters for twin sticks are like this there is no rubber dampener; there is no getting around it unless you somehow weld the rod back to the stock shifter (and buy two stock shifters). It does transmit some noise especially if you lean on the stick a little while the truck is in motion you can really feel and hear the gear noise of the truck. It's not much though to be honest, hell my floorboard isn't even 100% sealed yet and it's been that way for 6 or so years. To me, it reminds me of why I did the modification in the first place and I guess if it bothers you, turn up the radio.

Might be a stupid question but what is the plus side of running the FJ box instead of the stock one that comes in the truck??

I dont care about the noise one bit, I suppose I just needed reassurance that what I was hearing was infact that and not something else.

 Can't make everything bullet proof lol. But I agree I think that they tried way to hard to over complicate things when it wasn't broken in the first place and it worked.

Yes, it kind of sounds like a mini bench grinder going down the road. I went to a 1 piece driveshaft and got rid of the sound deadening tube as well so any noise from the rear differential comes right up into the t-case sticks.

Well yes nothing is bullet proof, but the rube goldberg layout of the front differential and t-case shifters is absurd. Just search "4x4 light blinking" or something similar and you'll see thousands of threads popping up with these parts failing; just think how much money toyota has made over the years through that piss poor design.

You can thank the soccer moms who want the 4x4 switch on the dash and are too lazy to go out and lock some hubs and move a lever like the good old days. I think the ESOF should be an "option" if one wanted it, and the manual shifting should be standard equipment in any truck but I guess that's why I don't work for auto companies because I'd lose them alot of money lol

Right in the end it is all about the money. Like you said it is all to stream line and make it "easy" for the soccer moms out there. I mean at least Toyota still has the gear selector in the middle of the seats while Dodge gear selector is like a damn volume knob. What would it run me to switch if mine ever gave me a problem down the road. I would do all the work myself.

Oh that's the Next mod for the 4th gen taco I'm sure :p
    [IMG]

The swap depends how cheap you can find a transfer case. I got mine on the cheap already twin sticked years ago, nowadays I'd say a decent tcase should be under $500.

Awesome that's not that bad at all. So has it been a problem with all the 2nd gen Tacoma's? Or is it certain years or is it just all across the board??

No specific years, Seems the trend I see there are two major groups with failures: those who like to go off-roading the actuators get moisture and funk in them and stop working, and those who never use 4wd the dielectric grease they put inside the motors dries up. But it seems no specific year, model, or generation is worse off. The design of them has not changed since 2005
