Yea I’d do all the plugs and replace the coil in question. Have you tried switching that coil with one from another cylinder to see if the problem follows it?

We use a combustion leak detector to check this.

You remove your rad cap and put this guy there. Then run the engine and pump the bulb a few times. If there are exhaust gasses passing through the head gasket into the coolant system, the fluid will change color.

 

Right. If you’re feeling ambitious. Put the plug, coil, and injector in different cylinders on the other side of the engine. You’ll know what your problem is by which cylinder the misfire moves to.

I would replace the bad one and carry a spare.

If you just replace plugs and coil you are not sure where the problem is/was.

 

Exactly. And if you move the coil and the problem is still #5 then you know you need to dig deeper. (Both into the engine and your pocket) I’m willing to wager it’s the coil though.

Ok. That’s what I’ll do. Plus it’ll save me $250 in coils.

My plan is change all the plugs and switch #5 to another cylinder. And see how that goes.

I bought a big tube of Die-electric grease as well to help deal with water issues. Any recommendations on how/where to apply this stuff?

Change just the coil to another cylinder B4 changing plugs.That way you know its the coil and not one of the plugs.

That’s a good price on coil packs. I believe Toyota charges over $100

I put dielectric grease in the tip of the coil pack where it seats on the spark plug, on the rubber boot where it seals, and on the electrical connection. I also put a bit of anti seize on the threads of the spark plug.
